During this difficult time being stuck in your own space, you have two options when it comes to food. 1) Cook the food yourself OR 2) Takeout. And let us tell you, cooking for 10 days, 3 meals/day is a lot of work plus the cleaning afterwards! So finally, we gave in to the world of food takeout. Guilty as charged! We didn't want to do this because we know how much plastic consumption there will be. How unethical of us! We couldn't bring our own containers due to hygiene regulations nor were we allow to dine in. What are we to do?!
We're sure you all are in the same boat and wish there is a better solution.
To answer your question, "There is!" Chula Zero Waste from Thailand came up with proposals for this matter (below). We hope to inspire everyone and incorporate the ideas into good use.
1. Apply 'no cutlery / Chopsticks / straws' for consumers to opt in or out in food delivery applications. Reconfirm during pick up that the consumers don't want plastic utensils.
2. Show "Eco Label" in the application for restaurants who participated in providing eco-friendly packaging. The consumers will be happier to know they are also contributing in this matter. Provide incentives such as savings to the consumers and or discount for partnered restaurants to motivate eco-habits.
Many other countries around the world have already contributed in plastic-free food delivery. Here are some examples:
• Reduce: at Singapore Grab, Food Panda and Deliveroo set default for customers to choose from plastic cutlery and have a discount code which reduces up to one million pieces of plastic / week.
• Replace: in England Deliveroo provides eco-friendly packaging. Sell to partner stores at cheap price.
• Reuse: In New York Delivery Zero, use food packaging box and let customers make an appointment for staff to pick up the box back later or return on the next order. Deposit cost is ONLY $2 / piece.
