Huge congratulations to Madilyn Wissman and Joanna Tao for being named Top 300 Junior Innovators in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC), a program of Society for Science! 🏆✨

Madilyn was a student at Hilo Intermediate School and Joanna was a student at Waiākea Intermediate School when they earned their nominations at the Hawaiʻi District Science & Engineering Fair in February 2026. Both of these brilliant minds are now 9th graders at Waiākea High School!Waiākea High School 🔬

Reaching the Top 300 out of thousands of applicants nationwide is an incredible achievement that highlights their hard work, creativity, and dedication to STEM. We were SO EXCITED to be a part of the Hawai`i State Science & Engineering Fair this past week at Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, HI. We brought students from Hilo High, Waiākea High, Hilo Inter, and Waiākea Inter to compete and they made East Hawai`i proud!!

We are so grateful for the support of our generous local sponsors to make this experience possible for our young scientists and engineers.

We will post our results as soon as they are finalized by the state committee.
