At DA BUX, we believe a love for fresh, locally grown produce starts at a young age. That’s why our Train the Trainer program equips participants with the skills and confidence to lead cooking classes in their own communities. 🌱🥬🥒

With guidance from Chef Brandon Hanagami, participants learn recipe adaptation, knife skills and safety, mise en place, sanitation, kitchen safety, and more—all while discovering fun and delicious ways to incorporate local produce into everyday meals.👨🏽‍🍳

Mahalo to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Cancer Center for the use of your facility, Chef Brandon and his team for sharing their expertise, and to all of our participants who share our vision of putting more local produce into the hands of Hawaiʻi’s keiki.

Local vs. import 🍓👀

We’re on a mission to try Kula strawberries, and we finally found some at ʻOkoʻa Farms, one of our amazing partner food hubs in Upcountry Maui. What a treat!

We did a side-by-side taste test with strawberries imported from California, and the difference was unreal. The locally grown Kula strawberries were sweeter, fresher, juicier, and packed with flavor 🌱✨

Nothing beats produce grown close to home. Support local farmers, taste the difference, and keep Hawaiʻi grown on your plate ❤️🍓

Visit DABUX.org to find where you can use DA BUX near you and discover more local produce across Hawaiʻi!

If we put an ‘ulu in front of you, would you know how to prepare it? Increasing access to locally sourced ingredients means nothing if we do not know how to use these fruits and vegetables. The Nā Kuke ‘Ōpio, young cook, classes teach keiki across the state how to safely prepare locally grown produce in their favorite recipes. For their last class, these students learned a local favorite using local ingredients—sushi.

Krystine Nakano and her culinary class explored cuisine both in the classroom and on field trips designed to get Kihei Charter School students thinking about where their ingredients come from and how to prepare them. The outcome of this program is to build confidence in their knowledge of foods grown in Hawai’i and how to prepare them.

The students were proud of their new skills and went on to prepare recipes for their families and friends outside of the classroom.

SNAP Hot Food Waiver Active Statewide ends tomorrow, May 16, 2026.

SNAP households across Hawaiʻi can temporarily use benefits to purchase hot foods at authorized retailers statewide from April 17 through May 16, 2026.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services (DHS) received federal approval for this waiver in response to the March 2026 Kona Low weather events, which caused flooding, power outages, and damage across the state.

This temporary waiver provides additional flexibility for households as recovery continues.

Normally, SNAP benefits cannot be used for hot or prepared foods.
