The Highland Area Community Foundation (HACF) held its 31st Annual Grants Banquet on October 8, 2026, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Highland, with 237 people in attendance. Jim Burgett, past president of the Foundation, served as emcee for the evening.
Grants totaling $236,188 were announced at this year’s banquet, sponsored by Busey Bank. With this year’s awards, the Foundation has distributed approximately $1.8 million in grants over the past 31 years, benefiting 140 different groups.
Of the 88 grants awarded this year, $126,068 went to 52 community organizations and schools through the Foundation’s unrestricted funds. An additional $110,120 was awarded through 36 specified funds to community organizations and schools, the Louis Latzer Memorial Public Library, the City of Highland, and local scholarship recipients.
Grants Committee Chair Jeff Hebrank announced the recipients, whose awards will support a wide variety of organizations serving the Highland area. These organizations address needs ranging from assistance for those less fortunate to programs for youth and senior citizens, the arts, Highland history, sports, and other important community needs.
Following the grant announcements, former Executive Director Terry Riffel presented a historical update on the Foundation’s role in establishing the Korte Recreation Center more than 25 years ago.
Special recognition was given to Ralph and Donna Korte in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Korte Recreation Center. Their generous $1 million donation was instrumental in making the Recreation Center a reality.
Riffel shared the history of the Recreation Center and reminded those in attendance that its story is ultimately about people who had an idea and were willing to work together to turn that vision into reality. Community members contributed funds more than 25 years ago, and their generosity continues to benefit the Recreation Center today. The project stands as a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together with a long-term vision.
Following Riffel’s presentation, current Executive Director Kevin Hemann presented a special commemorative plaque to Donna Korte and the Korte family in recognition of the historic occasion in 2001. The plaque will be permanently displayed at the Korte Recreation Center.
Foundation President Linda Manley recognized retiring directors Kevin Dewaele, Bonnie Gelly, and Julie Korte for their service and dedication to the Foundation. All three completed two three-year terms on the Board of Directors. During her service, Gelly also served one year as board president, and all three directors contributed to several committees during their six years of service.
Manley thanked everyone who attended for supporting the Foundation, celebrating the grant recipients, and sharing in an evening of fellowship and community spirit. She encouraged those present to continue supporting the Foundation’s mission through donations, volunteer service, and other contributions that help strengthen the Highland area.
In closing, Burgett thanked Busey Bank, the Foundation’s banquet sponsor since 2005; the Foundation’s donors and grant recipients; Scheffel-Boyle for its continued support; the Grants Committee; Banquet Chair Judy Neier and her committee; the Knights of Columbus for providing the venue; Cygan Delaney Catering for the meal; Mosaic Church for providing sound equipment; and Case Media Design for its technical services. He also expressed appreciation to everyone who attended and helped make the evening a celebration of generosity and community impact.
