Meet Jeanne — the heart behind So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary. ❤️

If you follow the Sanctuary, you see the horses, the rescues, the happy moments and the stories. What you may not always see is the person behind the scenes making sure it all happens, every single day.

Jeanne’s mornings begin around 4:00 a.m., seven days a week. Special meals are soaked and prepared, medications and individual needs are checked, and everyone is ready to be fed when the day begins. If she ever leaves the property, the clock is always in the back of her mind because afternoon feeding is waiting.

There really isn’t an “off” switch when animals depend on you.

For Jeanne, though, this has never simply been work. Caring for these animals feeds her soul. Rescue gave her a path where she knew she could make a difference, one life at a time, and after many years of doing this work, that dedication is still very much there.

There are difficult days, exhausting days and plenty of moments most people never see. But there are also beautiful ones — watching an animal heal, learning to trust again, or simply knowing they are safe.

And perhaps one of the most meaningful parts of this journey is knowing that so many of you have been here for years, some almost from the very beginning.

Jeanne sees you. She appreciates your encouragement, your kindness, your understanding and the love you continue to show these animals.

Happy Birthday to one of the most beautiful souls I have ever had the privilege of knowing. ❤️

Dixie, you are an extraordinary human being — kind, gentle, elegant, generous, and simply beautiful inside and out. I am so grateful, as all of us are, that you came into our lives.

I was going through photos of you and the Sanctuary today, and there are so many that I couldn’t possibly post them all. What struck me most was realizing that they go back nearly a decade. Nearly a decade of you showing up, loving these beautiful animals, giving so freely of your heart, and sharing your kindness and generosity with all of us.

That kind of love leaves a mark. It becomes part of the story of this Sanctuary and part of the lives of the animals and people lucky enough to have received it.

I’m sending you the biggest hug today, Dixie. You are missed, you are treasured, and you are loved more than you know.

There’s a rhythm to summer mornings at the Sanctuary.

We have a small window of time before the sun comes over the mountain ridge and the heat settles in, and over time we’ve figured out a routine that works beautifully—for us and, most importantly, for the animals.

Those early hours are when the big daily chores get done. Waters are checked and refreshed, animals are fed and looked over, pastures and shelters are tended to, and we make sure everyone has what they need before the day warms up.

The last few days have been absolutely gorgeous, and we’ll take every one of them. When you care for animals outdoors, you watch the weather constantly. We desperately need rain. The mountain is dry and dusty, and I can only imagine how beautiful it will be when the rain finally comes and everything gets a good drink and a good washing.

In the meantime, we keep working.

Projects are getting knocked out one by one, things are becoming more organized, and I can really see this beautiful place coming to life. There is still plenty of work ahead of us, but I think that’s part of the journey. A sanctuary is never really “finished.” There is always something to repair, improve, clean, build or make better for the animals who call it home.

The next few weeks are also trim time. Every one of our animals stays on a regular hoof-care schedule, and keeping them on that cycle is an important part of their health and welfare. It’s one of those routine expenses and responsibilities that may not be very glamorous, but it is absolutely essential.

This is sanctuary life. Early mornings, dirty boots, full water buckets, projects everywhere, and a long list that somehow never gets shorter.

But every morning when the sun comes over that ridge and I look around at these animals and this beautiful mountain, I can see how far we’ve come.

We still have work to do.

And that’s part of the journey. ♥️

There is something happening in animal rescue that I wish more people understood.

Every day, I see posts from people who desperately love their animals and suddenly find themselves facing veterinary care that can cost thousands — and sometimes tens of thousands — of dollars.

Before we judge them, I think we need to remember something: being unable to afford an enormous, unexpected veterinary bill does not mean you don’t love your animal.

Most people don’t have thousands of dollars sitting in an account waiting for an emergency. I don’t either. I run an animal sanctuary, and I pour everything I have into caring for these animals, so I completely understand what it feels like to look at a veterinary bill and wonder how on earth you’re going to make it work.

Sometimes people become so desperate that they offer to surrender an animal they love because they believe a rescue will be able to provide the medical care they cannot.

But here’s the part many people don’t see: the rescues are struggling too.

Most rescues aren’t sitting on large bank accounts. They’re trying to keep hay in the barn, food in the bowls, medications filled, farrier appointments covered and the animals safe. One major veterinary emergency can overwhelm a rescue just as quickly as it can overwhelm a family.

So we end up in this heartbreaking place: an owner loves their animal but can’t afford the care. A rescue desperately wants to help but may not have the money either. And somewhere in the middle is an animal who is deeply loved.

I don’t know what the answer is. I wish I did. But I do know we could start with a little more compassion.

Not everyone who can’t afford a huge veterinary bill is irresponsible. Not every rescue that has to say no doesn’t care. Sometimes there simply isn’t enough money to meet the need.

I’ve spent nearly 15 years in rescue, and if there is one thing I know for certain, it’s this:

Love for an animal isn’t measured by the size of your bank account.

Sometimes the person asking for help loves that animal more than we will ever know. And sometimes the rescue saying, “I’m so sorry, we can’t,” is saying it with a broken heart too. ♥️

Rescue is not a choice once it’s in your soul. There’s no way not to help an animal in need.

You see the one who’s scared, the one who’s been forgotten, the one who needs somewhere safe to land—and somehow, you figure it out.

You make room.
You find the resources.
You lose a little sleep.
And you say yes when sometimes it would be much easier to say no.

Because once you know you can make a difference in that animal’s life, walking away just isn’t something your heart knows how to do. ❤️

That’s rescue.

And I thank the stars every day for the people who choose this life alongside us.

You could be on vacation. You could be shopping. You could be spending your time a hundred different ways. Instead, you’re here—feeding, cleaning, hauling, donating, sharing, volunteering, checking in, and simply asking, “What can I do to help?”

Rescue may begin with an animal in need, but it continues because of people who care enough to show up.

To every one of you who shows up for them—and for us—thank you. ❤️
