Anyone who knew Ray O’Connor likely experienced his familiar greeting: “Hello, my friend.” And he meant it. Ray was genuinely interested in people. Before business, before progress, he cared about the people in his life and the community he loved.

Ray brought that same spirit to his years of dedicated service on the Central Community College Foundation Board. He believed deeply in the College, in its students, and in growing opportunities for Grand Island. Even while battling cancer, he remained committed to the Foundation because the mission meant so much to him.

Ray never missed an opportunity to tell you that your work was important, that you were doing it well, and to simply say, “Thank you.” He made people feel seen and valued.

Ray was real. He was kind. He was a champion for people and for this community. We will miss his friendship, his wisdom, his unwavering belief in Central Community College, and most of all, hearing him say, “Hello, my friend.”

Exciting things are happening on the Grand Island Campus!

The Central Community College Board of Governors has approved funding for a new residence hall to be built on the Grand Island Campus.

At the June board meeting, the green light was given for a 40,000-square-foot, two-story, 81-bed building to be constructed on the northwest corner of the campus. Features include shared kitchen areas, study spaces, laundry facilities, a pickleball court and a sand volleyball court. The residence hall will be located just north of the Center for Health and Technical Sciences.

The cost of new residence hall is estimated to be approximately $14 million. Construction will begin this summer and is expected to take one year for completion.
