Housing affordability is one of the most important challenges facing communities today.

When families can find housing that fits their needs and budget, our entire community benefits.

That's why expanding attainable housing options remains an important focus for the Foundation and our partners.

If you look around the Barry County community, you will notice those who have taken their volunteer service to the highest level. The Volunteer of the Year award honors an individual who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to community involvement and volunteer service.

Starting out with a quote directly from nomination packet…
He is motivated by a true desire to see young people find success in life. It’s as simple as that.

Chris Stafford became heavily involved with the Hastings High School Marching Band in 2016 when his kids joined the program. He was the president and board member of the Hastings Band Boosters, supported all events and programming with set up/tear down, initiated summer service projects for the group, lead efforts to build a band storage pole barn and helped maneuver the COVID-19 pandemic protocols to keep marching band students not only safe, but still able to perform.

For years he dedicated himself to the Hastings Band Program, where he became known as the “third band director.” After retirement from Bradford White, Chris moved on to assisting with the career and technical educational needs of all students in Barry County, starting his own business “The Hub of Barry County.” From volunteering with the Hastings High School’s robotics program, vice chair of the Barry Community Foundation, leading the Career Consortium of Barry County – it is clear that he does not take “no” for an answer when it comes to programming to help the youth of our community.

Congratulations to this year’s Volunteer of the Year, Chris Stafford.
