Want some FREE pre-bagged compost for your garden this fall? Then be sure to register for the upcoming compost giveaway at the downtown train station parking lot in Harrison on Saturday October 3rd. Spots are limited so secure your spot by signing up TODAY!

Important Information:
Westchester Residents must register online for a specific time slot to receive compost.

Registration can be completed at: https://environment.westchestercountyny.gov/residential-compost-distribution-events

Each registered resident will receive two 1-cubic-foot bags of compost. Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) staff will be on-site to verify registration and load pre-bagged compost into residents’ vehicles.

Another great reason to start food scrap recycling! Raccoons are attracted to food scraps in your garbage bin. But if you collect and recycle the scraps instead, they will leave your garbage alone.

Getting started in Harrison’s FREE food scrap recycling program is easy. Simply collect scraps in a countertop bin lined with a compostable bag. These bins have lids to contain the smell which is so much better than putting scraps in your under sink garbage bin. Once full, you transfer the bag to a larger locking transport bin in your garage. These transport bins can hold 3-4 bags of food scraps. Once full, you take the transport bin to one of 2 drop-off locations:

▪️Downtown train station parking lot adjacent to Macy Road

Harrison is home to many beautiful Red-Tailed Hawks and we are lucky to be able to see them often flying high above us in the sky or perched in tall trees.

But rodenticides used in homes and yards around Westchester County provide a real threat to their survival. You may not realize it, but using rodenticide inside your home can end up poisoning predators far outside your home, including hawks.

When rats or mice eat anticoagulant rat poison, they can take days to die and become slow and easy prey for predators. When a hawk eats these poisoned animals, the toxins build up and can eventually cause fatal internal bleeding. Close to 70% of Red-Tailed Hawks in NY tested positive for rodenticide in a study by Cornell.

To keep mice out of your home and keep predators healthy, try these safer alternatives to rodenticide:
▪️seal entry points to your home
▪️remove food sources
▪️attract natural predators to your yard by putting up nesting boxes for owls or perches for hawks.

We have big news! Downtown Harrison just got its very own food scrap recycling drop off site! Now residents in the downtown area have access to a free and convenient place to drop off food scraps collected at home!

The new site is located in the Metro North train station parking lot near Macy Road (adjacent to Rye Racquet). Stop by and check it out if you are in the area!

For residents looking to get started, please DM us with any questions. We also have access to discounted starter kits for anyone interested in starting to recycle food scraps.

Have you seen these little guys everywhere lately? They are early stage Spotted Lanternfly nymphs that soon will become Adult Spotted Lanternflys.

Spotted lanternflies are an invasive pest that threaten agriculture, forests, and ecosystems. They feed on the sap of many plant species, draining vital nutrients, stunting growth, and exuding a sticky liquid called “honeydew” that promotes the growth of harmful sooty mold.

If you see them, you should squish them - if you can. They are extremely quick and can jump far. Other efforts to control populations include removing their preferred host plant (Tree of Heaven) from your yard, and using eco-friendly traps on trees. .

SmartChargeNY helps EV drivers earn cash incentives for reducing stress on the energy grid by charging their EV during off-peak times. The easiest way to earn cash is by setting a timer on your EV charger to charge your vehicle overnight. One of our members signed up in April and has already earned over $100 in incentives!

Here’s how to do it.
1️⃣ Visit scny.ev.energy.com to create an account
2️⃣ Download the ev.energy.app and connect your compatible EV or charger.
3️⃣ Start earning incentives when you charge during off-peak hours in the ConEdison area.

There are convenient drive thrus for everything from coffee & food to ATMs. But did you know we also have a drive thru for household material waste here in Westchester?? It’s called the Household Material Recovery Facility (or H-MRF pronounced “h-murph” for short) and its located at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla. Oh and did we mention it’s FREE for Harrison residents?!? 😎

The H-MRF accepts a wide-range of household hazardous waste including the following (see full list online):
✅ Automotive fluids
✅ Car tires (with or without rims)
✅ Electronic waste (e.g. computers & TVs)
✅ Light Bulbs (Fluorescent, CFLs & LEDs
✅ Kerosene and other flammable liquids
✅ Paint & Wood Stains
✅ Rechargeable batteries
✅ Refrigerant-containing household appliances (e.g. air conditioners & dehumidifiers)
✅ Cooking fats, oils and grease

Residents can reserve a time slot for appointments (Tuesday-Saturday; 10am-3pm) up to two weeks in advance by calling the Recycling HelpLine at (914) 813-5425 or booking online here:

On the day of your appointment, safely pack your items in the trunk of your car and drive to the H-MRF in Valhalla. Be sure to bring your driver’s license for proof of residency. Once there, employees will unload your hazardous waste so you can quickly be on your way. 🚗
