When you have a dog, being a good neighbor means being responsible for more than just your dog. It means being mindful of the people and pets around you, too. We all share the same sidewalks, parks, neighborhoods, and community spaces.

*️⃣ 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐡. Unless you’re in a designated off-leash area, keep your dog leashed and under your control. In many communities, it’s also the law. Being friendly isn’t a substitute for being under control. Not everyone wants to interact with your dog, and not every dog wants a strange dog in their space.

*️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞’𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲. Don’t let your dog wander into someone else’s yard, garden, driveway, or landscaping. Even a friendly dog can disrupt another pet, damage someone’s property, or simply make a neighbor uncomfortable. Give other people’s spaces the same respect you expect for your own.

*️⃣ 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲. 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞. 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞. Sidewalks, parks, trails, common areas, and yes, other people’s yards are all part of our shared community. Nobody should have to step around it, step in it, or clean up after your dog. Carry the bag. Use the bag. Dispose of it properly. It really is that simple.

*️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 “𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲” 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. Your dog may love people. Your dog may love other dogs. Your dog may be the sweetest dog in the neighborhood. That’s wonderful, but responsible pet ownership means respecting that other people and animals get to have their own boundaries, too.

A good dog owner doesn’t just have a well-loved dog. They have a dog they can responsibly manage in the community.

What a special day near Pilot Mountain!

We had the privilege of joining Mount Jubilee Ministries for their annual camp retreat, where our dogs spent time with more than 60 campers and their one-on-one support partners.

The campers were mostly adults, along with a few teenagers, and they were an absolute joy to meet. Our dogs did beautifully! There were plenty of smiles, pets, connections, and wonderful moments that reminded us exactly why we do what we do.

We’re grateful to Mount Jubilee Ministries for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful day. Sometimes the best connections don’t need words, just four paws and a wagging tail.

Back-to-School Reminder: Service Dogs in the Classroom

As students return to school, it’s a good time for parents to have an important conversation with their children: some classmates may have a service dog by their side.

A service dog at school isn’t a classroom pet. That dog is there to work and help their handler safely and independently get through the school day.

Please remind your children:

🐾 Don’t pet, call to, whistle at, or distract a service dog.
🐾 Don’t offer the dog food or treats.
🐾 Give the dog and handler room to move together.
🐾 Never tease or interfere with a service dog.
🐾 If you’re curious, it’s okay to ask questions, but be respectful of the handler’s response.

The best way to be a friend to a classmate with a service dog is to let their dog do its job.

A little talk at home can help create classrooms where every student and every working dog is respected and welcomed.

📚✏️📓📝A new school year is here, and we’re so excited to see what it has in store! Our Highland Canine Connect therapy dog teams can’t wait to get back into schools, reconnect with students and teachers, and bring plenty of wagging tails along with them.

And, of course, we’re especially excited for Waggy Tales to begin again! There’s nothing quite like seeing kids build confidence and a love of reading with a four-legged friend by their side.

Here’s to a wonderful school year filled with learning, growing, reading…and lots of tail wags! ❤️🐾

Nothing says “back to school” quite like smiling faces, wagging tails, and a community coming together! 🐾🎒

Therapy dogs Frankie and Stella had a wonderful time at the Iredell-Statesville Schools Back 2 School Bash at West Iredell High School, where they met so many incredible students and families.

Events like this help ensure every child starts the school year with confidence by providing: free school supplies, backpacks, shoes, and food!

We’re grateful to everyone who made this day possible and wish all of our students an amazing school year!
