Holy Apostles Catholic

Holy Apostles Catholic Holy Apostles Parish is the recently merged parishes of Saint Joseph the Worker (Hanson) and Our Lady of the Lake (Halifax). Offices are in Halifax.

The two churches retain their respective names, but the new parish name is effective February 1, 2021. We dedicate ourselves to all who form our parish community, whether active or inactive, that together we may continue to grow in the discipleship of Christ Jesus.

In last week's Gospel, Peter was granted the status of first Apostle and leader of the Church. Why the change? It seems that, even after all this time, he is still thinking too small. Jesus rebukes him and encourages him to lift his eyes and mind up and outward to the surprising way in which the Lord is going to save humanity.

This is Father Hobson's role here at Holy Apostles Parish - to get us to see God's plan, as big and "impractical" as it may be! That's how God works.

Today, the Church commemorates John's death at the hands of King Herod. John's death foreshadows Jesus' death in some key ways. He is killed by a ruler who hesitates in executing him (Herod = Pilate), he is killed for speaking the hard truths to the people, and his disciples take his body away afterward. Whether John knew all the details or not, he had faith that he had spoken the truth to power. Saint John the Baptist, grant us at Holy Apostles Parish your courage today.

Herod killed John the Baptist to avoid the embarrassment of breaking a promise to a 12-year-old. This shows us the foolishness of pride. In contrast, John’s willingness to die for the sake of the truth shows us that humility is the way to follow the Lamb of God.

Ever wonder why God sometimes speaks clearly, but other times he seems quiet? St. Augustine writes about how God is quieter because he goes further inside of us into our hearts, and he wants us to search for him there.

St. Augustine, pray for us that we may have the faith to seek him whom we love!
