So proud of our winners from the AAUW MI Educate to Elevate convention!
Special congratulations to Dr. Sarah Lucas, recipient of the Young Member Award and a dedicated member of the AAUW MI Membership Committee. She contributes so much to the committee’s work and is a valued pillar of our organization.
The convention was outstanding. I encourage members and board members to attend whenever possible, and I also encourage branches to allocate funds to help cover members’ convention expenses.
Thank you, AAUW MI.
Today we celebrate our 2026 AAUW of Michigan award recipients in our ongoing recap of our recent convention in Battle Creek.
Dr. Sarah Lucas, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religions at Ferris State University, was presented with the Young Leader Award, which honors members who are seen as budding leaders within their branches. Lucas is the co-Membership Vice President for the Big Rapids branch and a member of the AAUWMI Membership Committee that works to share best practices in member recruitment and retention with all branches statewide. She also served as her branch's Scholarship Committee Chair this past year.
Susan H. Grant, a retired attorney and district court judge, received the Martha Griffiths Equity Award. Known as the “Mother of the ERA,” Griffiths was a strong proponent for women’s rights during her 20 years representing her Detroit-based district in the U.S. House. Grant learned about AAUW while living in Florida and working on the campaign to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. She moved to Big Rapids in 1977 and soon joined the AAUW-Big Rapids branch. Grant was instrumental in the campaign to induct BIg Rapids' most famous former resident, women's suffrage leader Anna Howard Shaw, into the National Women's Hall of Fame. In recognition of her leadership role in this effort, Grant had the honor of accepting Shaw's award at the induction ceremony in Seneca Falls in 2000. Grant was the first woman attorney in Big Rapids and the first woman judge in Mecosta and Osceola counties. She has been involved in numerous community organizations as a volunteer, sponsor, and/or board member.
Sally Doty received the Liz Ku**er Award recognizing those who have advanced the goals and ideals of AAUW in an exceptional and significant manner. A member of the Birmingham branch, Doty has served in multiple leadership positions at both the branch and state level. She is a past AAUWMI President and served multiple terms as Finance Director. She spearheaded the creation of the Birmingham branch's Foundation and strongly promotes financial support of AAUW's various mission-based funds to her branch members.
Congratulations to all our awardees!
