In our next chapter in the adventures of Vet Tech Superheroes ...
PREP – here’s where we’ve really got first hands-on now that cats are sedated. Techs watch carefully to ensure cats are responding well to anesthesia while simultaneously shaving and cleaning the right area for surgery. Here you learn how to tie specialty knots on spay boards like a seasoned sailor, shave just enough but not too much, and react to a kitty waking up like The Flash. It might seem cool, calm and collected in this station – but they’re juggling!

What do the Vet Tech superheroes do at Spay Days?

KNOCKDOWN – the tech administering injectable anesthesia is truly “in the hotseat”. The surgery room needs a steady flow of cats to keep surgical teams busy, but we also don’t want cats under anesthesia longer than necessary. Add to that that we don’t know how many of the day’s cats will be male or female, small kittens or chonky toms - and an undescended testicle can throw a wrench in the wheel! A smooth day that makes the most of all volunteers’ time, and keeps cats and people safe, hinges on the superpowers of the Captain Marvel tech in knockdown!

These marvels are uncommon - Saturdays are Tawana Hanamann and Tuesdays are Carrie "Booster" Taddy! THANK YOU BOTH!

Let’s get real ... without Veterinary Technicians, “Spay Day” just doesn’t happen. We say that a lot about the great folks holding the scalpels in surgery, but do you know how much vet techs do at our TNVR clinics?

The whole effort depends on the expertise and hard work of techs – certified or not, retired or actively in the field ... even a few human nurses who have learned the ropes!

We've declared June to be Celebrate Vet Techs month at Cats Anonymous, and we'll be sharing some of the spay day specifics weekly!

And then there was the last kitty at spay day… 65 cats altered, ear tipped and vaccinated! Not a bad way to kick off Memorial Weekend- no more kittens! Have a safe holiday weekend 🐾

Many of our students, instructors, and followers are deeply involved in seeking humane solutions to mitigate dog and cat overpopulation and the impact of free-roaming animals on the environment, public health, and animal welfare. We're impressed with this newly published systematic literature review on this topic.

After reviewing hundreds of papers, they concluded, "Culling has limited, context-dependent effectiveness, whereas birth control within integrated strategies more consistently achieves sustained outcomes across domains. Effectiveness depends on coverage, duration, and addressing drivers of population inflow, including abandonment and uncontrolled breeding."
