📜 Officially Proclaimed: October is Head Start Awareness Month in Clay County!

🍎✨Today, Clay County Judge Executive Tommy Harmon officially signed a proclamation recognizing October 2026 as Head Start Awareness Month! This proclamation honors the vital, lasting impact of Head Start and Early Head Start programs across our region—from preparing our youngest learners for success in school and life to providing essential health, nutrition, and whole-family support services.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Judge Executive Tommy Harmon and the entire Clay County community for their steadfast partnership and continued dedication to KCEOC Community Action Partnership, our Head Start staff, and the children and families we are privileged to serve every day.

KCEOC Community Action Partnership, Inc. is seeking qualified individuals for the position of LIHEAP Intake Worker in Knox County. This position is temporary part-time which will run through the duration of the LIHEAP program.

The LIHEAP Intake Worker is responsible for assisting in the administration of the LIHEAP program including the organization of daily operations, initial client assessment and the processing of applications for a variety of KCEOC programming. Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED with some basic office, computer, and phone skills. College courses in sociology, social work or psychology along with three to five years experience in human services is preferred. Experience in working with programs which directly serve the public is also preferred. Applicants should be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Interested applicants may submit their applications Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at KCEOC’s main office located at 5448 North Highway US 25E Gray, KY 40734. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

🌾 Day 5: Farmer’s Friday & The Grand Finale of Spirit Week! 🚜🌻

To wrap up our Head Start Awareness Month Spirit Week, our team at KCEOC Community Action Partnership broke out the flannels, overalls, and farm boots for Farmer’s Friday!

Just like farming, early childhood development is all about planting the right seeds, tending to them with care, and nurturing strong roots so children can thrive for a lifetime.

As Spirit Week comes to a close, we reflect on the true heart and lasting impact of Head Start in our community:

Head Start Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Justin Gibson 🔬✨

During Head Start Awareness Month, we celebrate the incredible journeys that begin right inside our early childhood classrooms. Today, KCEOC Community Action Partnership is proud to spotlight Justin Gibson, Ph.D.

Justin graduated from Head Start in 1998 at Island Creek under the caring guidance of his teacher, Ms. Rosetta Sherman. Looking back, he credits Head Start with providing critical resources and opportunities that quite literally changed his life's trajectory—giving him an essential head start in his education and opening doors to a world of possibility.

One of his favorite childhood memories was an unforgettable Head Start field trip to the Knoxville Zoo. Fascinated by dinosaurs, he picked up a dinosaur keychain during the visit—a keepsake he still treasures today!

That early curiosity grew into a career at the forefront of medical science. Today, Dr. Gibson serves as a Senior Scientific Manager in Oncology drug development for Genentech in San Francisco, California, leading vital research in cancer therapies and life-saving treatments.

From the classrooms of Island Creek to groundbreaking oncology research on the West Coast, Dr. Gibson’s journey demonstrates how early investment, dedicated teachers, and expanded horizons can shape a child’s entire future.

Today, our staff repped their favorite sports teams, game-day colors, and school pride—with our amazing kiddos at Cannon Head Start showing up strong in their team gear!

🍂 A Day Full of Fall Fun at Arrow B Ranch! 🎃

Our little explorers from the KCEOC Child Development Verda Evarts Center had an absolute blast on their recent field trip to the Arrow B Ranch Pumpkin Patch in Jonesville, VA!

From playing fun farm games and meeting new animal friends to riding the train, zooming down the long slide, and exploring the grounds, our Head Start students made memories that will last a lifetime with their classmates and teachers.

As we celebrate Head Start Awareness Month, experiences like this highlight the diverse, hands-on learning environments and enriching adventures our children get to experience every day—building curiosity and social skills far beyond the traditional classroom.

We want to thank the amazing farm staff for giving us such a wonderful time, and our dedicated teachers for helping make this adventure so special for our kids!

Today our team at KCEOC Community Action Partnership is showing off our wildly mismatched, colorful, and wacky socks!

Head Start is all about celebrating what makes every child unique, encouraging creativity, and remembering that learning should always come with a big dose of fun. When we step outside the box (and into silly socks), we remind our little ones that being uniquely you is something to celebrate every single day!

Head Start Alumni Spotlight: Melissa Owens Woodford 🌟

​During Head Start Awareness Month, we celebrate the foundation that early childhood education builds for lifelong success. Today, KCEOC Community Action Partnership is proud to spotlight alumna Melissa Owens Woodford!

​Melissa enrolled in Head Start in 1981 and graduated in 1983. Looking back on her earliest classroom days, she fondly remembers her teacher, Ms. Linda Lewis, who made a lasting impact. Melissa shares that Ms. Linda always made her feel safe, gave her confidence, and helped her break out of her shell to connect with others.

​That early foundation of encouragement helped pave the way for a remarkable career in healthcare. Melissa went on to earn degrees in both Pharmacy Technology and Respiratory Therapy. Today, she serves our region as a Respiratory Therapist Specialist at Rockcastle Regional Hospital and Respiratory Care Center as well as AdventHealth Manchester (Manchester Memorial Hospital).

​From her first steps in a Head Start classroom to providing vital respiratory care across our communities, Melissa exemplifies the true power of early childhood investment.
