Today we celebrate Naturalist Jessica's 20 Year Anniversary with Clinton County Conservation! Through public programs, school visits, field trips and many other outdoor adventures, she has helped people of all ages learn about, appreciate and connect with nature. 🐢🐝🌸

We are so grateful to have had her dedication, enthusiasm and knowledge and look forward to the next 20!😉

Naturalist Hannah, along with leaders from Dubuque and Jackson County Conservation Boards took a group of adults on a backpacking trip to the Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this past weekend. They spent 3 nights camping at various locations along the Little Carp River and then along the Lake Superior shoreline. The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a 60,000-acre park made up of small rivers, old growth forests and beautiful waterfalls. We had a great group of participants that worked well together, embraced the daily challenges and made this trip unforgettable.

Last chance to sign up for tomorrow's Caving Adventure at 5:30 at Eden Valley! It closes at noon, September 1st. https://www.mycountyparks.com/County/Clinton/Park/Eden-Valley-Refuge/Events/29210/Caving-Adventure

This adventure is for older children and adults, though I have had kids as young as 4 in the cave. If you have younger children, it is so pretty at the entrance of the cave, it is fun just to look around the pasture, if you are waiting for your family to finish touring.

You will get dirty! It is best to wear layers and old shoes/boots. I will be wearing knee pads, shorts, tank top, then pants and a long sleeve t-shirt, possibly gloves, bring flashlights, flip flops/slides/crocs and plastic bags... Then before I get in my vehicle, I take off my long sleeves and pants, then put on my flip flops so I do not get my vehicle seats dirty. You may want to throw your shoes away after this, depending on what all you do.

We will meet at the Nature Center. When you get there, you will grab a helmet, make sure it fits and buckles. Then we will climb into cars and will go to a private cave. Depending on how many cars show up...we will either have you park in specific places on the edge of the driveway and some may have to park on the gravel road. If the farmer, Alan, is there, PLEASE say thank you and sometimes he wants to know where you are from. Also, please tell yourself and whoever is with you to be respectful and if there are things that you see that you're not used to seeing or smelling, keep it to yourself, it is a working farm. We will go by the house and we will be in a single file line to go up a hill that has very tall corn. We will need to keep everyone together without knocking down corn, it is their lively hood! Remember to Shut ALL GATES! Once we are on top of the hill and people are counted...we will descend a hill. Sidestepping is the best way to get down the hill. Once we are there, there will be an introduction to the cave. Just know that there will be some baby crawling and army crawling. Then you will be in a BIG room you can stand in and decide on what type of adventure you want!

September 2nd ~ Monarch Tagging Wagon Ride ~ 1:30 PM ~ Lost Nation Public Hunting ~ Join us for a fun afternoon of catching, tagging and releasing Monarch butterflies! We will meet at the parking lot and then head out on the wagon to find the Monarchs! Please dress to be in and out of prairie areas and bring plenty of water! Space is limited, sign-up by calling 563-847-7202. If you are interested in a later time that day, feel free to call/text 563-212-0955.

September 5th ~ Eden Valley Nature Center Season Finale ~ 10 AM - 2 PM ~ This could potentially be the last time to experience the nature center in 2026.

September 5th ~ Bear Creek Rubber Duck Race ~ 2 PM ~ Eden Valley Campground ~ Join us for a fun afternoon of rubber duck racing at Eden Valley! Meet at the campground host site in the modern campground to sign up and send your duck down Bear Creek. Kids will receive a prize from the treasure tote, while adults will compete for a chance to win free nights of camping.

8th ~ Sun Printing with Turmeric ~ Noon & 4 PM ~ Rock Creek ~ Join a naturalist and learn how to make beautiful prints with sunlight and plant pigments! Sun printing requires a processing time that is dependent on weather. Plan to be at Rock Creek Marina & Campground for a few hours. The cost is $5. Registration is limited and required via mycountyparks.com. There are two time slots available, one at noon and the other at 4pm. For questions, call or text Emma at 563-357-0759.
