🔥 TURNING ON YOUR HEATER FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON? STAY WARM & STAY SAFE!

As temperatures drop, Pecan Plantation Fire-Rescue encourages all residents in our community to review these essential winter heating safety tips:

• It May Smell at First: A slight burning or dusty smell can be normal when you first turn on your heater as dust burns off elements. The odor should fade as the system runs.
• Check Your Detectors: Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly with fresh batteries.
• Replace Your Air Filters: Dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause your heating system to overheat.
• Keep Flammables Away: Maintain at least 3 feet of clearance around portable heaters and other heating equipment.
• No Extension Cords: Never use extension cords or power strips with space heaters. Plug them directly into a wall outlet.
• When a Smell is NOT Normal: A strong electrical burning smell, smoke, sparks, or a persistent burning odor indicates a problem. Turn the system off and have it inspected by a professional.
• Smell Rotten Eggs?: This indicates a natural gas or propane leak. Leave the home immediately, avoid operating electrical switches, and call 911 or your gas provider from outside.

🎃 Jack-o’-lanterns and bonfires can light up Halloween night. 🔥Wildfires can too, if fires aren’t properly extinguished.

Trick or Treat, Check the Heat!

Before you burn, always check local burn bans and weather conditions. Keep water and tools nearby, never leave fires unattended, and make sure everything is completely extinguished before walking away.

✅ Check local burn bans and weather conditions before burning.
💧 Keep water, a shovel, and other tools nearby.
👀 Never leave a fire unattended.
🔥 Completely extinguish all flames and smoldering material.
✋ If the ashes are too hot to touch, they’re too hot to leave.
🏠 Ensure ashes are cool before going inside or leaving the area.
