Welcome to September!

Today is September 2, 2026, which is V-J Day, or the day the Japanese officially signed a formal surrender marking the end of World War II. In September, we recognize National Su***de Prevention Month, National Americana Month and National Service Dog Month, among others.

Labor Day is on Monday, September 7. Patriot Day, or National Day of Service & Remembrance, is on September 11; this is the 25th anniversary of the hijacking and crashing of planes into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, the U.S. Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. Uncle Sam Day is on September 13, Constitution Day & Citizenship Day is on September 17, POW/MIA Recognition Day is on Friday, September 18, as is the birthday of the U.S. Air Force and Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day (sometimes written Gold Star Mother's and Families Day) is on Sunday, September 27.

Both the VFW and VFW Auxiliary celebrate their starts this month. Our Auxiliary birthday is September 14; we are 112 this year. VFW Day is on September 29; they are celebrating 127 years of service.

Many children are returning to school this week and next, though across the country countless kids have already started, as some kick off their new year as early as mid-August, while others go year-round. Whenever your local schools commence the new year, we know thousands of students will be doing so with the supplies they need thanks to the continued efforts of VFW and VFW Auxiliary members.

At VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters, we have received a number of questions recently about VFW and VFW Auxiliary scholarships and contests. There is some confusion about which scholarships and contests "belong" to which organization, so we've created this quick, handy guide to help keep it all straight!

August 7, 2026 National Purple Heart Day!
This day honors United States service members who have been wounded or killed in combat. The date marks the anniversary of the Badge of Military Merit, created by General George Washington in 1782. It is the oldest military decoration still given to U.S. service members.
The Purpose of this day: A time to remember the physical and emotional cost of freedom.
