The Lakin Foundation Child Development Center of East Mills

The Glenwood Rotary Club’s 2023 annual grant supported the purchase of a musical play feature for the playground at The Lakin Foundation Child Development Center of East Mills. In 2025, the Club awarded additional funding for a Kodo Kids light table with accessories. Both additions provide inclusive, open-ended play opportunities that support creativity and development for children at the Center.

The Lakin Foundation Child Development Center of East Mills is located in a newly renovated facility in Malvern, Iowa, and opened its doors in October 2025. The Center is licensed to serve up to 136 children ages 6 weeks to 12 years and operates Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is state-licensed, accepts Child Care Assistance (CCA), and currently has openings available. Glenwood Rotary Club Treasurer Joe George presented $1,000 Community Service Scholarship checks over winter break to Abygale Luddington, left, (Buena Vista University) and McKenna Wilkes, right, (Iowa State University) after successfully completing the first semester at their respective schools. Aby and McKenna were recognized for their outstanding community service while attending Glenwood Community High School. Congratulations to both students as they begin their next semester!

In December, thanks to many generous Mills County donors, Glenwood Rotary Club presented a total of $3,500 to four organizations that provide critical support to our community -- the Love Tree, THRIVE, the Mills County Storehouse Food Pantry, and the Mills County Ministerial Association Food Pantry.

The Rotary Foundation recently announced that it received a four-star rating — the highest level possible — for the 17th consecutive year from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator in the United States.

The Rotary Foundation owes this success to the unwavering support and dedication of Rotarians who make the Foundation a powerful force for meaningful change and lasting impact through service.

President Lori Umberger exchanges club banners with Marilyn and Carl McDanel of the Plymouth-Foothills Club in Plymouth, California. The McDanels are their club's roving ambassadors while traveling the country on vacation and visiting Rotary clubs along the way. We enjoyed their visit and learned a lot about them, their club, and their District.

Coming soon to Glenwood’s town square: vibrant petunias! 🌸 Last night, Glenwood Rotarians joined forces with the Glenwood Betterment Association to plant the square’s flowerpots. They just need a little more time to grow, and soon they’ll be adding a splash of color downtown!
