We are happy to announce some good news regarding Bill Crain's court case, which has dragged on for over a year and a half! As you may recall, in 2024, Bill crossed the road at the Whittingham Wildlife Management Area and walked toward the weigh station, where hunters have the dead bears weighed. When the police told him to go back, he politely but steadfastly refused, and was arrested and charged with obstruction. But last week, the judge dropped the charge and ruled that it was de minimus; it did no harm.

We are very relieved because the obstruction charge was the one with a possible jail sentence. This was Bill's 10th arrest at the weigh station, and he has already been jailed on three prior occasions for protesting the trophy hunt. While we know that Bill would have bravely accepted another jail sentence, we overwhelmingly did not want this to happen.

A second and lesser charge of violating DFW regulations is still pending. It carries a civil fine and is not considered a criminal charge.

To Bill we say, thank you for the many times you have physically and mentally put yourself at risk in order to call attention to the plight of New Jersey's black bears. We love you.

Bill's statement is as follows: "I chose to protest alone in this case. I stood on the grass, outside the driveway leading to the weighing apparatus. I wore my "Mother Nature Is Crying Sign." The police ordered me to protest at other locations and arrested me when I refused to leave. In the June 26 hearing, the judge pointed out that the police's authority isn't unfettered."
