🌿 What does Strawtown’s Nature Art Summer Program do for kids that regular camps don’t?

Strawtown offers something rare: unstructured time. Open-ended exploration. The freedom to follow a dragonfly, get muddy, build something that doesn't "work," and discover anyway.

In those unhurried hours, children learn things that overstructured programs can’t teach:
→ How to be bored — and let creativity fill the space.
→ How to take risks without a grade attached.
→ How to belong to something bigger.
→ How to look at the natural world and feel genuinely at home.

Neuroscience backs it up: unstructured play in nature reduces anxiety, builds executive function, and sparks the kind of imaginative thinking that solves real problems. But beyond the science, it's just good for the soul! ⭐

🌱 One teaspoon of healthy soil. More living organisms than there are people on Earth.

What are we walking on?

We tend to think of soil as dirt, something beneath us, something we track inside on our shoes. But soil is one of the most complex, teeming communities on the planet. Bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa, earthworms, beetles - billions of living beings in every handful, all doing work that keeps the entire web of life intact.

They break down what has fallen. They release what plants need. They make it possible for seeds to become forests, for rain to become rivers, for fields to feed families.

Sound familiar?

That's because it IS familiar - Communities working together, organisms dependent on each other, strength found not in isolation, but in relationship.

The soil beneath our feet is not silent. It is humming.

At Strawtown Studio, we bring children to the ground, literally. To kneel down, look closely, ask questions, and understand that they are not separate from the natural world. They are part of it. By working with soil, clay and mud as natural pigments in our projects, children learn to appreciate the nature around them, practice conservation, and see their environment in a new light.

🌍💨🔥💧 What a spring to remember!

As our InHabit Art afterschool program in Haverstraw, NY wraps up an incredible season, we are filled with so much gratitude for the children, families, and the supporters who made every single moment possible.

What a nature discovery season it was!

This spring the four elements - Earth, Air, Fire and Water were our playful companions. The students noticed how they interact to influence our natural surroundings and climate.

We built stick shade structures, 🪾 painted with clay and mud, 🌬️ created wind catchers that captured the movement and grace of the wind, 🐦 crafted bird puppets, 🪶 explored ink drawing with feather quills, 🪨and gathered stones and marked them with symbols of the elements.

A great joy was setting sail on the Hudson River aboard the historic Clearwater Sloop, feeling the water and the wind work together in real time - these young people didn't just learn about the elements. They lived them.

Every project, every outing, every moment of wonder was rooted in the core of what InHabit Art is all about: getting children outside, into nature, making art, and discovering the extraordinary world right in their own community where they live.

Here's to an unforgettable spring and to every day of wonder still ahead! 💚

We are still glowing. 🌿✨

On June 6th, Strawtown Studio Founder Laurie Seeman was celebrated as an Environmental Champion at the 2026 Gala, honored for inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders.

Scenic Hudson has spent decades protecting the Hudson River and the lands that surround it. Their commitment to the next generation of environmental champions is a commitment to the children growing up along these shores - the ones learning to love this river, this valley, and this world.

That is exactly the work we do every day at Strawtown, matching children’s curiosity with nature exploration, hands-on art making, and place-based science.

Here's to everyone who has brought us to this great moment!

🌿 Happy World Environment Day!

Nature isn't just our backdrop, it's our teacher. At Strawtown Studio, every program we offer is rooted in the belief that when young people have time outdoors to develop a relationship with the natural world, they are more likely to care for it.
