The Gardiner Fire Department and its members extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow first responders mourning the tragic loss of James “Jimmy” Brugger and his wife, Melinda “Mindy” Brugger.

Jimmy dedicated so much of his life to the fire service and the greater Hudson Valley first responder community. From his service as a Lieutenant with the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department and Past Chief of the Plattekill Fire Department, to his work as a state and county fire instructor, Jimmy’s commitment to the fire service touched countless lives and helped shape generations of firefighters. He was also well known throughout the Hudson Valley as a talented bagpiper and, above all, as a friend to so many.

During this incredibly difficult time, we keep the Brugger family, their loved ones, and the many fire departments, agencies, and organizations whose lives were touched by Jimmy and Mindy in our thoughts and prayers.

The loss of two members of our extended first responder family is felt throughout our entire community.

Rest in peace, Jimmy and Mindy. Your memory and legacy will not be forgotten. 🙏🏻

🔥 **Weekly Training Update** 🚒🚑

Last night, members of the Gardiner Fire Department participated in our weekly training on both the Fire and EMS sides.

🚒 Fire: Our firefighters participated in a tanker shuttle drill hosted by the Orange Lake Fire District. In rural areas without fire hydrants, tanker shuttles are critical for maintaining an adequate water supply during fire suppression operations. These incidents often require multiple departments to work together to continuously transport and deliver water to the fire scene. Training together helps ensure these operations run safely and efficiently when it matters most.

🚑 EMS: Our EMS members reviewed new protocols related to medication administration and discussed the assessment and treatment of toxicology patients and behavioral emergencies.

Regular training keeps our members prepared for the wide variety of emergencies we may face. Thank you to the Orange Lake Fire District for hosting and to everyone who participated!

Last night our drivers completed their Driver Recertification, putting their skills to the test through a series of EVOC style driving stations.

From precision maneuvers to vehicle control exercises, each station reinforced the safe driving skills that are essential during emergency responses. Regular training like this helps ensure our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when our community calls.

The members of the Gardiner Fire Department extend our thoughts and prayers to the members of the Coldenham Fire Department following last night’s devastating fire that caused significant damage to their fire station and destroyed several pieces of apparatus.

Our thoughts are also with those who sustained minor injuries, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

A firehouse is more than just a building. It is a second home, a place of service, and the heart of a department. While the road ahead will be challenging, we know the fire service stands together in times like these.

Please keep the members of the Coldenham Fire Department in your thoughts as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding. The Gardiner Fire Department stands with our brothers and sisters, and we are ready to help in the any way we can.

Our department was proud to have Fire 3rd Lieutenant Justin Wadsworth and Firefighter Tyler Domer serving as part of the FAST team alongside members from the Wallkill, Modena, Plattekill, and Coldenham Fire Departments during the FF1 Live Burn at the Ulster County Public Safety Training Center.

It was a pleasure to watch the FF1 students, who are nearing graduation, demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout this demanding summer bootcamp. The live burn represents the culmination of countless hours of classroom instruction, hands on training, and hard work, and it was great to see everything come together in a realistic fireground environment.

We would also like to extend a special honorable mention to Firefighter and Past Chief Marc Alexander, who generously volunteered the first half of his summer to help train these students alongside the program's instructors. His dedication, experience, and commitment to developing the next generation of firefighters played an important role in the success of this year's bootcamp, and we sincerely thank him for his outstanding service.

Congratulations to all of the FF1 candidates on reaching this milestone. You looked great, performed exceptionally well, and should be proud of everything you have accomplished. We look forward to welcoming you into the fire service and wish you safe and successful careers.

This past Monday, Gardiner Fire Department members sharpened their water rescue skills during a hands on training using a local resident’s pool to simulate realistic rescue scenarios.

Members practiced victim rescue, safe removal from the water, and throw bag deployments to stay ready when every second counts.

Monday Night Drill brought members together for another evening of training and skill development.

As part of our monthly focus on forestry and wildland firefighting, members spent the evening honing their chainsaw operations skills under the instruction of 1st Assistant Chief Brian Stiscia and 2nd Assistant Chief Matt Aube.

Firefighters practiced the proper and safe operation of chainsaws while cutting trees of various sizes and in different positions. Training focused on selecting the appropriate saw for the job, safe cutting techniques, and building the skills needed for storm response, wildland incidents, and other emergencies involving downed trees.

Inside the station, our EMS crew went back to basics, reinforcing the foundational skills that every provider relies on. Members reviewed and practiced vital patient assessment techniques including blood pressure measurement, pulse assessment, blood glucose testing, and other core EMS skills that serve as the foundation for quality patient care.

No matter the discipline, continuous training ensures our members remain prepared to safely and effectively serve the residents of Gardiner whenever the call comes in.
