🍄 Wild Things: Brooklyn Foraging Tour

🧑‍🌾 Join the "sustainable food" contingent of 350Brooklyn's Facing the Future workgroup on a foraging tour of Prospect Park, led by "Wildman" Steve Brill.
🧺 If you're interested in gathering edibles, bring a plastic bag for greens and/or a paper bag for mushrooms.

🔎Also bring your appetite and your curiosity because after this tour you will see the park and your surroundings in a totally new way like you’ve never seen before…
An edible way! A knowledgeable way! Because You will be able to look at the wild plants around you and identify which ones we could eat.

🗓️ Saturday, June 13th
⏰ 10 am—12 noon.
📍 Meet at the Grand Army Plaza entrance to Prospect Park.

No RSVP necessary—just meet us at Grand Army Plaza at 10:00 am!

☎️ ☎️ Make 2 calls to cut plastic packaging in NY by 30%! and help pass the Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act (PRRIA).

🗓️ 1. Call Assembly Speaker Heastie to ask him to schedule a vote on A1749-a now!
Dial 518-455-3791 and visit bit.ly/call-heastie for a script.

✅ 2. Call your Assemblymember to ask them to vote YES!
Go to bit.ly/pass-prria Dial (844) 311-4414, or text the word "packaging" to 833-300-0783 to be connected directly.

👉(Find your representative here - www.mygovnyc.org/)

🤢 THE PACKAGING REDUCTION & RECYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE ACT WOULD:
* Ban 13 of the most toxic chemicals and substances currently used in packaging, including all PFAS chemicals, lead, mercury, cadmium, vinyl chloride, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, BPA, phthalates, and more.

* Reduce single-use plastic packaging by 30% over the next 12 years & require 75% of the remaining packaging to be truly recyclable or reusable by 2055.

* Save taxpayers money by shifting the cost of paying to deal with packaging waste from taxpayers to the huge companies responsible for creating the packaging.

* Save municipalities millions of dollars over just 10 years. 💰

* Prevent so-called "chemical recycling" from counting as recycling.

* Provide desperately-needed funding for recycling infrastructure and waste reduction projects by putting a modest producer fee on single-use packaging.

🌿Grow Your Own: Urban Gardens that Matter🌿
Sunday, May 17, 1:30 pm
Bedford Public Library Brooklyn Public Library
496 Franklin Avenue

As global temperatures rise, what will be the impact on food? Join our Grow Your Own: Urban Gardens that Matter event for a presentation by urban gardener Kostancja Maleszynska at 496 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238. Kostancja will discuss growing at all scales, from a plot in a community garden to a pot in your window. Part of this free event will be an indoor talk, and part will be a demonstration in the library's backyard.

From taking first steps in understanding plant growing in urban conditions, choosing the right crops for the right spot, and finding a plant palette that will feed, flower and delight, Konstancja will demystify what it means to start and maintain your own edible garden.

Drawing from her experience in urban farming at the Brooklyn Grange, gardening with the Parks Department, and maintaining her own experimental garden in Greenpoint, Konstancja will demonstrate ideas for micro, mini and medium spaces, as well as city regulations and best practices for a successful garden that nourishes, lasts, and builds community.

CLIMATE CHECK: BANNING MEGA-DAIRIES IN NEW YORK
Our host, Audrey, is joined by Alex Beauchamp, Northern Region Director at Food & Water Watch - New York. Food & Water Watch fights for the safe and healthy food, clean water, and livable climate we all deserve.

In this episode, Alex talks about the proposed bill to ban mega-dairies in New York State. Alex brings us through the issues with mega-dairies, what the bill would do, and what it's going to take to pass it.

Based in Michigan, Alex oversees all Food and Water Watch's organizing work throughout the region with a particular focus on New York. Alex started as an organizer with Food & Water Watch 17 years ago and has served as the Region Director since 2012. He has led the New York team to victories in winning a statewide ban on fracking, a cryptocurrency mining moratorium, a landmark gas ban in New York City, and shutting down the Danskammer and Astoria NRG fracked gas power plants and defeated several fracked gas pipelines proposed throughout New York.

While Kathy Hochul is hellbent on destroying our state’s Climate Law (call her now:518-474-8390), the brilliant Bill McKibben drew more than 100 people to 350BK's Solar Revolution Update at The Caves on Wednesday night, to learn about the global solar power juggernaut that is moving countries off reliance on dirty, expensive fossil fuels at an astonishing rate, noting "sunshine doesn't have to go down the Straight of Hormuz!". Joined by Hana Johnson, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher’s Deputy Chief of Staff who talked about The SUNNY Act, which will bring balcony solar to NY State, and Coen, Policy Director of spoke about the ASAP Act which increases the goal for NY solar development to 20 GW by 2035 and removes unnecessary red tape that increases costs and slows down grid connection. (ASAP is another bill Hochul is trying to gut.) Van Korff from Solar One! explained how every NYer, renter or owner, can access solar power, and Brooklyn SolarWorks generously provided beer and snacks. Photo shows Hana, Bill, Jonathon, our MC Susan Augenbraun and Graham, mentioned above.
