🐾 “WHY SHOULD I SPAY MY CAT?”
The other day, I saw someone giving away free kittens. Someone commented, “Please consider spaying the mother.” It was a simple, well-meaning suggestion.
The response was, “WHY??”
Well, there are actually a LOT of reasons why. And this goes for dogs, too!
🐱 LET’S TALK ABOUT CATS FIRST.
• One unspayed female cat can have multiple litters every year.
• Kittens can become pregnant as young as 4 months old. Yes, kittens having kittens!
• Spaying prevents pyometra, a potentially fatal uterine infection.
• Spaying before the first heat dramatically reduces the risk of mammary cancer.
• Pregnancy and nursing take a physical toll on a mother cat, especially when she’s having litter after litter.
• Not every kitten given away for free ends up in a safe, loving, permanent home.
• Unwanted kittens may end up abandoned, sick, injured, or struggling to survive outdoors.
🐶 AND WHAT ABOUT DOGS?
• Female dogs can also develop life-threatening pyometra.
• Spaying reduces the risk of mammary tumors, especially when done early.
• Pregnancy and delivery can lead to serious complications, including emergency C-sections.
• Unneutered male dogs may roam in search of females, increasing their risk of being hit by cars, getting lost, or fighting.
• Neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer.
• Every unplanned litter means more puppies needing homes that may already be impossible to find.
💔 NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT THE REALITY OF ANIMAL SHELTERS.
Especially in rural communities.
Many rural shelters are overwhelmed. They have limited space, limited funding, limited staff, and far more animals coming through their doors than they have homes available.
Some shelters have no choice but to euthanize healthy, adoptable animals because there simply isn’t enough room.
Rescues are full. Foster homes are full. Volunteers are exhausted. And the calls for help NEVER stop.
Those cute little puppies and kittens being given away today can become the unwanted animals of tomorrow.
And the heartbreaking truth? We cannot adopt our way out of an overpopulation problem. Prevention is the answer.
❤️ BUT HERE’S SOMETHING ELSE PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND.
Not everyone who has an unaltered pet is irresponsible.
Some people genuinely love their animals and WANT to have them spayed or neutered. They simply cannot afford the surgery.
That’s exactly why organizations like People For Animals exist. We help qualifying pet owners with the cost of spaying and neutering their pets.
But there’s a problem.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS. DESPERATELY.
We have people calling us asking for help. People who WANT to prevent another litter. People who are trying to do the right thing.
But without volunteers to return those calls, screen applicants, and help arrange financial assistance, we cannot reach everyone who needs us.
🐾 YOU CAN HELP CHANGE THAT — RIGHT FROM YOUR OWN HOME!
You don’t have to foster animals. You don’t have to transport them. You don’t have to work at a shelter.
You just need:
• A love for animals and a desire to make a difference.
• A computer or laptop and basic computer skills.
• A little spare time, even as little as one day a month.
• To be located in Middle Tennessee.
We provide training and guidance!
Every phone call you return could help prevent another unwanted litter. Every pet owner you assist is one step toward fewer animals entering overcrowded shelters.
We talk so much about rescuing animals after they’re born, abandoned, or surrendered.
But what if we could prevent so much of that suffering in the first place?
That’s what spay and neuter assistance does. And that’s what our volunteers help make possible.
🐾 PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING WITH PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS.

THE BEST RESCUE IS PREVENTION. ❤️
And right now, we need more people willing to help make that prevention possible.
