Fox Island Chapel On Echo Bay Fox Island's Chapel on Echo Bay, with its lovely waterfront gardens overlooking the Fox Island bridge, provides the perfect location for any event!

Check out our sister site for event information at https://www.facebook.com/EventsOnEchoBay The Fox Island Chapel Preservation Society, a community based non-profit corporation, owns, maintains, and operates the historic Chapel on Echo Bay. Our mission is to ensure the legacy of the old Sylvan Chapel as a center for cultural, visual and performing arts programs. The Society serves the greater commu

nity by providing a variety of services and programs that maintain and perpetuate the integrity and spirit of the one-hundred-year-old Chapel. In addition to preserving the facility as an historic site and heritage center, the Society provides activities including educational programs, recitals, concerts, and other visual and performing arts events. The roots go deep. They reach back across the century to pioneer families who came to Fox Island from Grinnell, Iowa and started the Congregational Church of Sylvan in 1892. They named their settlement "Sylvan-Glen" in honor of the wooded beauty surrounding them and became the first permanent colony on this remote island. On August 19, 1900, "Eells Bell" rang out high atop in the new steeple announcing the dedication of the lovely white Chapel on Echo Bay. Why "Echo Bay"? This sheltered cove on northeastern Fox Island was so named for the legend that says an echo will resound seven times around the bay before it fades away. Echoes of the past still seem to fill the cozy sanctuary which, over time, has served as celebration center, library, meeting hall, and performance venue as well as a house of worship and heart and soul of the island community's heritage. The Fox Island Chapel Preservation Society was formed in 1999 and acquired the facility in January of 2000. In a two-year project, the lower floor was renovated including a new kitchen, a bridal party dressing area and a spectacular reception room that opens to the waterfront garden.

Marjorie Doris Schultz Barnhart Hargitt wanted her life to be remembered on Fox Island at the Chapel on Echo Bay when she passed. Saturday, on a perfect sunny afternoon, friends and family gathered to remember their beloved mom and celebrate her 96 years of an adventurous life well lived.

What made the day even more memorable was that Marjorie’s dad bought Tanglewood Island in the 1930’s and built the Ta Ha Do Wa camp for boys on Tanglewood that opened in 1946. Marjorie grew up learning to swim in Echo Bay and Hale Passage and loved the outdoors - passing her passion for water and canoes to her 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

After a violin concert of her favorites, a wonderful slide show, heartfelt eulogies and Marjorie's favorite sweet treats, the family headed over to Tanglewood for a private send off of Marjorie’s ashes - returning her to the places that meant so much to her.

Wishing the family peace and healing in the days to come.

Congratulations to Robert and Lori! With friends and family from local fire stations and from all over the country to wish them well, they promised to love each other through all of life's seasons. They had BBQ from BBQ2U and gave out small bottles of BBQ2U's signature sauce. It was a honor to share the joy and love of this couple and their friends.

The Armstrong’s tied the knot on a beautiful spring afternoon on Fox Island. Their 3 year old son stole the show with is energy as ring bearer and his enthusiasm waving at everyone in attendance. The couple wrote their own heartfelt vows about their journey after meeting 6 years ago - they spent time in different places as a long distance couple, growing as friends, parenting and today marriage.

Cheers from the Fox Island Chapel to Mitch, Alani and Nathan as you continue to celebrate your family and the life you’ve built. We wish you a long and happy life together.

We had a beautiful wedding this weekend which featured two Chapel firsts - the bride's dad clad in a kilt and a live stream of the event. Morgan and Matthew looked amazing as they read their heartfelt vows. We wish them years of happiness and good fortune.

We had a second generation wedding Saturday at the Chapel. Nathan's parents were married here in 1996! The food, refreshments and treats looked wonderful. The photo booth was a big hit and the weather shined brightly on Nathan and Aris as they begin their life's journey together. Congratulations to them.
