GOLD works around the world to raise awareness of COPD & to improve the lives of those living with it.

The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) works with health care professionals and public health officials around the world to raise awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and to improve prevention and treatment of this lung disease. Through the development of evidence-based strategy documents for COPD management, and events such as the annual celebration of World COPD Day, GOLD is working to improve the lives of people with COPD in every corner of the globe.

World COPD Day is only a few weeks away! This year's theme aims to emphasize that although COPD is a common, preventable, and treatable disease, extensive under- and misdiagnosis leads to patients receiving treatment later in the disease course. The realization that environmental factors other than to***co smoking can contribute to COPD, that it can start early in life and affect young individuals, and that there are precursor conditions (pre-COPD, PRISm), opens new windows of opportunity for its prevention, early diagnosis, and prompt and appropriate treatment.

Healthy lungs need protecting throughout life.

Prevention is an important part of maintaining lung health — from vaccination and reducing exposure to to***co smoke and air pollution, to taking part in appropriate screening and acting early when symptoms appear.

Regular physical activity, healthier environments and access to the right care all have a role to play.

Looking after our lungs isn’t something to think about only when there is a problem. Proactive prevention can help protect lung health throughout life.
