HAPPY WORLD PARROT DAY!
Most don't know back in 2004 World Parrot Day was created to educate about Parrot and their decline in the wild from the illegal pet trade and their habit being eliminated. Many species of parrots are endangered.
Parrots are high intelligent creatures. They are problem solvers and have the ability to make tools to achieve their goals. They also extremely loyal. When they find a mate they bond for life. Even after they find a mate the stay with their flock.
As pets or companion birds you just don't throw them in a cage with some food and water. Being highly intelligent they need constant stimulation to thrive. Many different toys help with using their minds.
If anyone is thinking about opening their home to a bird no matter the breed or size you will need to do your research.
Life style changes you will have to do for the safety of the bird and is better for you.
Most cleaning supplies, nonstick pots and pans, candles, air fresheners ( sprays or plug-in) and even perfumes can be a death sentence for the animal. They can be extremely loud. Some species can reach 130 decibels. In comparison a 747 engine is around 130 to 140 decibels.
Most large parrots out live their owners and unfortunately wind up in rescues and sanctuaries. Not because they are bad animals but because people don't understand what it truly take to keep an animal that was never intended to be a pet.
One final note, the word tame when it comes to birds. You really don't tame a bird. You build TRUST with the bird. It takes lots of time and patience and training. And they pick you. You dont pick them!!
