What does it mean to give?
In the gospels, Jesus tells a story about two different gifts. A rich man makes a show of his gift, by dropping loads of money into the offering plate, and a poor woman secretly gives her only two coins. Who gave the better gift? Christ teaches us that while the rich man gave from his surplus, the widow gave out of her own need. When we travel to Kenya every year, we see real life examples of this parable. We give out of our physical abundance, but the Kenyans give despite their deep need. Straw to Bread members have been gifted chickens, goats, sugar cane stalks, dresses, and much more, all from individuals who may only eat protein once every 2-3 months.
