🚔💙 Neighbors, community, and a whole lot of fun at National Night Out! 💙🚔

Cheshire Home residents and staff had a great time at Florham Park’s National Night Out, an annual community-building event that brings residents, local law enforcement, first responders, and neighbors together to strengthen relationships and celebrate the communities we call home.

Our residents and staff enjoyed a great evening out, connecting with neighbors and enjoying everything the event had to offer. Thank you, Florham Park, for welcoming us to this fully accessible event and making us feel right at home! 💙

💙 Cheshire Home celebrates Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month 💙

At Cheshire Home, we know that a spinal cord injury can change a person’s life in an instant. We also know it does not define who they are or what they can accomplish.

Our residents remind us every day that independence, purpose, community, and possibility continue long after injury. Through supportive housing, meaningful activities, opportunities for independence, and a community that believes in what’s possible, Cheshire Home helps individuals with spinal cord injuries build fulfilling lives on their own terms.

A voice for change, right here at Cheshire Home. 💙

Former Cheshire Home resident and current Front Desk Receptionist, Liana, recently volunteered her time to speak with our residents about New Jersey Assembly Bill A2691, which proposes increasing the monthly Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) from $50 to $140 for low-income residents living in nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals, and developmental centers.

Having experienced life at Cheshire Home firsthand, Liana understands the importance of having the resources to make personal choices and meet everyday needs. She wanted to make sure our residents were informed about the proposed legislation.

The Cheshire Home team had the opportunity to learn about an exciting new access option for power wheelchair mobility! 👀♿️

We welcomed Mary and Mike from Quantum Rehab for an in-service and hands-on demonstration of their proportional eye-gaze technology, which allows users to control the direction and movement of a power wheelchair using their eye movements.

Unlike traditional eye-gaze controls, proportional technology can translate where a person is looking into more precise, variable movement, which creates a smoother and more intuitive wheelchair driving experience.

We are always excited to explore innovative assistive technologies that can expand independence, mobility, access, and choice for our residents.

💙 We’re just $2,700 away from helping Cheshire Home residents Rise and Walk! 💙

Brian’s journey is a powerful example of how the Rise&Walk® machine can help make walking again possible. In the video you can see Brian walking unassisted, something that took dedication, hard work, and countless hours of therapy. Through his work on the Rise&Walk®, Brian built his strength and progressed to walking on his own. He recently graduated from Cheshire Home, taking that hard-earned progress and greater independence with him into his next chapter.

🧇 Cheshire Home Celebrates National Waffle Day! 🧇

Cheshire Home’s Vocational Rehabilitation Group celebrated National Waffle Day on August 24 with a waffle bar, complete with plenty of toppings and lots of opportunities for creativity! August 24th marks the day in 1869 when Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York, received the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron.

Residents practiced using a simple, accessible kitchen appliance, the toaster, which can be a helpful option for individuals with limited hand function or dexterity. The group also had the opportunity to practice everyday skills like opening packages and containers, choosing ingredients, cutting, and assembling a meal independently.

And, of course, everyone got to make their waffle with the toppings of their choice! 🧇🍓🍫

🌱 Growing something special at Cheshire Home! 🥕🍅🥒

One of our Cheshire Home gardeners, Maciej, has been hard at work, and his green-thumb magic is really paying off! Our resident gardens are thriving and producing an amazing harvest of vegetables.

From planting and watering to watching those first vegetables appear, gardening gives our residents the opportunity to get outside, connect with nature, and enjoy the satisfaction of watching something grow from their own efforts.

We are excited to share that 3D printing is officially up and running at Cheshire Home! 🖨️♿️

A big thank you to Colin, an engineering student at Stevens Institute of Technology, who is joining us this summer as a Maintenance Support Specialist and helping our team learn the ropes of 3D printing as we begin designing and creating custom solutions.

For our first project, Colin helped Director of Maintenance, Mike Davidson, make custom caps for the Hoyer lift motor compartments. This is a solution that helps protect equipment and makes everyday use a little easier. A Hoyer lift helps safely transfer our residents between a bed, wheelchair, chair, or other surfaces, while also reducing physical strain and the risk of injury for caregivers.

And this is just the beginning. With 3D printing now in place, we have a new tool for innovation, customization, and solving real-world challenges for our residents.

🎲 💙 A heartfelt thank you to the Rotary Club of Madison for spending time with us at Cheshire Home!
