"The King is in the field" is a traditional metaphor meaning that during the Hebrew month of Elul, God leaves His royal throne room to become easily accessible to everyone in their everyday lives.
The Parable of the King
During the rest of the year: The king stays in his palace. To see him, you must pass through heavily guarded gates, follow strict royal protocols, and get a special appointment.
During Elul: The king goes out to the countryside and camps in the fields. Anyone can approach him without special preparation. He greets everyone with a warm, smiling face and listens to their requests right where they work.
