Our next pride spotlight is a pretty special one—We’re featuring Mary Campbell of Mare Modern Goods !! Here is what she had to say:
“I often wonder what draws some people to horses while leaving others completely uninterested. They are large, powerful, opinionated animals that can be intimidating—and even dangerous—if you don’t know what you’re doing. Yet they are also sensitive, intuitive, willing, kind, and remarkably generous creatures who, despite being prey animals, allow us—the ultimate predators—onto their backs and into their world. Horses possess an extraordinary ability to judge character, but not based on superficial things like appearance, gender, race, sexuality, income, or education. Instead, they seem to respond to what truly matters: Are we kind? Curious? Calm? Clear in our communication? In many ways, horses offer a master class in how to move through a world filled with differences and diversity. As I reflect on Pride this year and what it means to me as a gay woman in the equestrian community, I’m struck by how little my sexuality has influenced my experience with horses. That said, I would be remiss not to acknowledge that I am also a white woman who can often “pass” as straight. That has undoubtedly made some aspects of my journey easier. And while there is still much work to be done, the world—including the equestrian world—has become more accepting of LGBTQIA+ people than it once was. By virtue of circumstances I had no control over—my race, my upbringing, and countless other factors—I have benefited from many advantages. But perhaps the greatest advantage I have at this point in my life is age. The experiences I’ve accumulated over the years—the struggles and successes, heartbreaks and triumphs—have given me perspective and wisdom that I can share with those coming up behind me. I can use my voice to advocate for them, help them find their path, defend their right to simply exist as they are, and educate those who may not yet understand.” (Cont’d in comments)
