Today, we celebrate Jimmy Gast and 7 years of sobriety! 🙏

Just over five years ago, Jimmy took a chance on a family he had never met, a family who had lost their loved one to an overdose in August 2019, just a few months before Jimmy began his own sobriety journey in October 2019.

The purpose of that first meeting was simple: to decide whether Jimmy wanted to become the House Leader of that family’s recovery residence, the HOFFA House.

There was an incredible irony that none of us could have fully understood at the time: the family’s loved one who passed away was also named Jimmy.

Jimmy stepped into the HOFFA House as its very first resident and leader. He helped open the doors, establish the culture, build the foundation, and create an environment centered around recovery, accountability, brotherhood, and hope.

Then he did something truly special, he groomed his replacement and transitioned out of the house to become the first full-time employee of the HOFFA Foundation, serving as our Program Coordinator.

And look at what has happened since…

🏠 Helped guide the HOFFA House to MCORR certification
📞 Started the HOFFA Helpline, now fielding more than 1,500 calls every month
👥 Hired and trained two additional full-time employees
🚗 Helped provide more than 10,000 free rides to treatment for people across Maryland
🤝 Supported countless individuals and families seeking a path to recovery
❤️ Given his time, energy, and heart to HOFFA and numerous other nonprofits throughout our community

And that’s only part of the list.

What started with one man taking a chance on a family became a mission that has touched thousands of lives.

Jimmy Gast, your sobriety didn't just change your life. It became a source of hope for so many other people.

You walked through a door that was opened because of tragedy, and you have spent the last seven years opening doors for others.

Today, we celebrate YOU! Your courage, your commitment, your service, your leadership, and most importantly, your continued sobriety.

We couldn't be more proud of you. ❤️

Monday Night Dinners at the HOFFA House are all about connection. We share good food and impactful conversations that support every part of the recovery journey. We believe good nutrition, good physical activity, and good sleep can help people feel stronger in both body and mind.

Last night, Dez, our Director of Wellness, shared insight on rebuilding the body and rebuilding the mind with our residents and board members. Everyone took away a few simple steps they can start today to live healthier.

Five years ago, we opened the doors to the HOFFA House, an MCORR-certified men's Recovery Residence in Sykesville, Maryland. It's hard to believe it's already been five years. It feels like just yesterday we were holding our Community Support Day and cutting the ribbon.

These past five years have been filled with incredible success stories, heartbreaking losses, and countless reminders of why this work matters. When we began this journey, just two years after losing our loved one to an overdose, we knew there would be both light and darkness along the way. We made a commitment to help other families know their loved one had a safe place and a real chance at recovery.

As a nonprofit, we knew we'd have to roll up our sleeves, fundraising to keep the doors open while working to break the stigma surrounding addiction, a disease that impacts so many families and does not discriminate. What we didn't expect was the overwhelming support from our community and from people across Maryland who believed in our mission.

If someone had told us then that The HOFFA Foundation would impact thousands of lives in just five years, we would have never believed it.

Our very first House Leader became our first full-time Program Coordinator and helped identify another critical barrier in recovery: transportation. That led to HOFFA Transportation Services, which has now provided more than 10,000 free rides across Maryland for individuals seeking immediate treatment and continues to average 500 rides every month.

That work evolved into the HOFFA Helpline (1-866-577-9810), now staffed by three full-time employees who answer more than 1,000 calls every month, helping individuals and families find hope when they don't even know where to begin.

Today, we see an even bigger opportunity on the horizon with RecoverSphere, a model we believe can be replicated across Maryland to strengthen the continuum of care and save even more lives.

Looking back, it's incredible to think that all of this started with one decision: to turn pain into purpose by opening the doors of the HOFFA House.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has volunteered, donated, partnered with us, or simply believed in our mission. Please know that every single dollar raised goes directly toward saving lives in our community.

Here's to the next chapter. 💜
