⚠️ BEWARE! Scammers are sending fake text messages claiming to be from the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS).
➡️These messages may claim that your EBT card was declined or that suspicious activity has occurred on your account.
➡️Their goal is to trick you into sharing personal information and stealing your benefits!
If you receive a text like the ones pictured above, IT IS A SCAM!
DO NOT:
❌ Reply to the message.
❌ Click on any links.
❌ Call the phone numbers provided.
❌ Share your EBT card number, PIN, or personal information.
DO:
✔️ Delete the suspicious message.
✔️ Check your benefits through official channels.
✔️ Warn family members, friends, and neighbors about these scams.
Remember: The Prince Edward County Department of Social Services and VDSS will NEVER ask you to provide your EBT card number or PIN through an unsolicited text message.

Check out this beautiful "Fall Comfort" basket, crafted by PSR Nutrition Program Coordinator Nikki Reamer Dean and donated by PSR to support the Cumberland Library's "Sweets in the Stacks" fundraiser!

Illiteracy isn't just a hurdle for children—it heavily impacts our senior community. According to data tracked by the American Library Association, roughly 36 million adults in the U.S. struggle with basic reading and math skills, heavily driving socioeconomic disparities.

Older generations experience higher rates of low literacy largely due to historical gaps in educational access and expanding educational opportunities over subsequent decades.

This is why our local libraries are a literal lifeline. Libraries do so much more than house books. When you support your library, you fund:

• Digital Literacy Training: Helping older adults safely navigate telehealth appointments, pay bills online, and stay independent.
• Lifelong Learning Programs: Offering free adult education classes and language resources to bridge historical education gaps.
• Accessible Formats: Providing large-print books, screen magnifiers, and audiobooks for seniors navigating vision changes.
• Combating Isolation: Creating free, trusted social spaces that host adult book clubs and community activities.

Supporting our local libraries is a direct investment in the health, dignity, and literacy of our older community.

We would also like to address the change in the race time. The race was advertised to begin at 6:00 PM. However, due to the cancellation of the concert and the impending bad weather, we made the decision to move the race up. With our staff having to be in the water to conduct the race, we did not want to risk anyone's safety if the weather suddenly turned severe.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this change may have caused, especially for anyone who planned to arrive specifically for the race. The safety of our staff, volunteers, participants, and community had to come first. We truly appreciate everyone's patience and understanding. ❤️
