Wilderness Louisville is thrilled that the Shawnee Outdoor Learning (SOL) Center groundbreaking happened this afternoon!
We are grateful to all of those who worked with us to make this amazing facility come to light, including the West Louisville Outdoor Recreation Initiative Community Council (this facility was rooted in the wishes and work of the west Louisville community. Thank you!), Jessica Kane and the entire Natural Areas Division, Michelle King & Jason Canuel of Louisville Parks & Recreation, and our political supporters at the local and state level. Councilmember Donna Purvis has been a tireless advocate of the SOL Center supporting our efforts, along with Mayor Greg Fischer who enabled the $2.5M seed money from Louisville Metro Council that got the finances rolling on this project! Mayor Craig Greenberg included us in his 2024 request for state funding and Governor Andy Beshear approved and forwarded to the Kentucky General Assembly. To our state Senators and Representatives, in particular Senator Gerald Neal - thank you for supporting this community vision!
The SOL Center will serve as the home base and program office of the Louisville is Engaging Children Outdoors (ECHO) program, and we are excited for the future of the ECHO program as the SOL Center will now enable year-round ECHO programming. We are also looking forward to the possibilities for community partnership that the SOL Center will allow.
Stay tuned for progress updates on the SOL Center!
