Stay hydrated y’all!

Have you ever seen a tortoise drink?

If so, you might have had a moment of panic. They plunge their entire head—eyes, nose, and all deep into the water bowl and leave it there for minutes at a time.

Tortoises don’t have flexible lips or tongues designed for lapping up water like a cat or dog. Instead, they use their throat like a vacuum pump. By submerging their mouth and nostrils completely, they create the tight seal and suction needed to gulp large amounts of water efficiently.

Crazy facts:
A healthy Sulcata tortoise can comfortably hold its breath for up to 1 to 2 hours under stressful conditions or when sleeping submerged.

Summer is officially here, and as the temperatures start rising, our daily routine is shifting a bit.

We’re focusing extra hard on keeping everyone cool, comfortable, and safe in this heat! ☀️

Because of that, content might be a little limited over the next few weeks while we adjust to the new summer schedule.

This is Crazy Eyes

She survived a severe childhood canker infection that left her with a severe crossbeak. Years later, she faced a life-threatening oral growth that required a massive upper beak amputation.
The choice was devastatingly simple: risk a massive upper beak amputation surgery, or humanely euthanize. We took the chance because we knew this girl was a fighter—and she proved us right by recovering in record-breaking time.
Today, Crazy Eyes is actually our most feral, independent pigeon. Against all odds, she has completely learned how to self-feed! She now only needs hand-feeding a few times a week just to ensure she’s maintaining weight (and mostly for my own peace of mind). She carries on with the rest of the flock with almost zero daily human intervention.

Crazy Eyes is a daily reminder that just because something or someone looks different, it doesn’t mean they are wrong. She isn’t broken—she is wonderfully, defiantly whole.

Sweet Ricky. He is blind, he has neurological challenges, and by all medical accounts, he shouldn’t be here.

But Ricky clearly didn’t get the memo.
This is Ricky’s third summer with us—a milestone he has far surpassed his expected timeline to see.

Because we don’t know how much time we have left, we don’t waste a single second worrying about the future. Instead, we focus entirely on making right now a good time.

For Ricky, that means filling our days with his absolute favorite things: splashing around in the pool,surfing and sharing quiet, cozy napping sessions together.

Thank you, Ricky, for being our daily reminder that the universe works in mysterious ways. You prove to us every single day that sometimes, the impossible is completely possible.
