The Artnauts is an artist collective that uses the visual arts as a tool for addressing global issues while connecting with artists from around the world. The name derives from com

bining the words “art” and “astronaut” as a way to describe the process of exploring uncharted territory in the world at large (for example, currently the collective has an exhibition that is traveling down the Amazon River for three years to over 30 remote sites). The name also denotes the practice that is “not” art as usual, going beyond the confines of the traditional or conventional art world and blurring the boundaries between art, activism, and social practice. The Artnauts have worked at the intersection of critical consciousness and contemporary artistic practice to impact change for almost two decades with over 150 exhibitions on four continents.

"Thirty years ago in Sarajevo, the most basic of daily life included dodging the sight of the sniper. Everyday, going to work, to school, or just to retrieve water, required the stress of dodging fatal intent. For the people that live here, the precarity of peace is fresh and ongoing. A battle for remembrance to find commonality, community, to defend from complacency.

“This Here” recalls a citizen of Sarajevo showing his scars from being under fire. Inspired by the incredible modeling of hands in the "Embraces" paintings by Safet Zec, “This Here” is a testament of determined perseverance." ~ Heather Hanson

Inspired by Joseph Beuys’ 'Show Your Wound' and his belief that creativity has the potential to heal, the exhibition’s artists explore wounds as sites of pain and truth, often concealed and avoided out of fear. Healing begins when the wound is faced and revealed, allowing art to serve as a form of social revelation and shared reckoning."

That same wound of self doubt is also triggered with the subtle, ingrained prejudices & legal structures to prove that I am less powerful, less reasonable & less believable than a white man. "Metastatic Wound"

"Metastatic Wound references my prostate cancer. The image at the top references the location of cancer spreading beyond my prostate gland. Since my cancer had metastasized, I was diagnosed as having Stage 4 Cancer, which is the most advanced category of cancer. The other image is the scar that remained after my radical prostatectomy. Chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation have kept my Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) numbers at a level that allows me to keep living. Though I am being monitored for elevation in PSA numbers every three months, my oncologist informed me that these numbers will fluctuate from serious to less serious throughout my life. I am fully aware of the ultimate consequences of this illness in my life. However, I am not afraid and heal myself by living a full and meaningful life with whatever days I have left." ~ George Rivera, PhD
