The Artnauts is an artist collective that uses the visual arts as a tool for addressing global issues while connecting with artists from around the world. The name derives from combining the words “art” and “astronaut” as a way to describe the process of exploring uncharted territory in the world at large (for example, currently the collective has an exhibition that is traveling down the Amazon River for three years to over 30 remote sites). The name also denotes the practice that is “not” art as usual, going beyond the confines of the traditional or conventional art world and blurring the boundaries between art, activism, and social practice. The Artnauts have worked at the intersection of critical consciousness and contemporary artistic practice to impact change for almost two decades with over 150 exhibitions on four continents.

It was incredibly moving to see the beautiful Artnauts Art Collective film “Art Not as Usual” at the Denver Film Festival. Congratulations and thank you to director Annie Eastman , Artnauts founder Dr. George Rivera producers P B Quigley and Martha Russo and many other Artnauts too numerous to name, but I’ll try!: Heather Hanson Barb Colombo Beth Krensky claire jackel Rebecca DiDomenico Rebecca Vaughan Nancy Lovendahl and Luis Valdovino. RHIZOME: Origins at CU Art Museum is Part 1 of the 30th Anniversary exhibition of the Artnauts Collective. Characterized by spontaneous growth over an ever-expanding network of cells, the rhizome is an organism that generates multiple points of connection and departure. Undergoing constant evolution in the process of self-creation, the rhizome is also an analogy for Artnauts Collective, which "uses the visual arts as a tool for addressing global issues while connecting with artists from around the world".

For 30 years, the Artnauts—a global collective of artists—have brought contemporary art to places the elite art world rarely reaches: the Colombian Amazon, Rwanda's Kigali Genocide Memorial, and the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Rooted in the belief that art must be understood within its social context, the collective's 256 exhibitions have become sites of burgeoning friendship, reflection, and exchange. At its center is founder Dr. George Rivera, whose early encounters with racism and classism planted the question that continues to drive the Artnauts: How do we stop hate with love?

Artnaut Faten Nastas Miteasi Faten Nastas Mitwasi has curated an important exhibit opening soon in Chicago!

New Forms of Survivance celebrates the work of Palestinian artists and offers a platform through which they share their stories, reflect on their fears, and express their dreams. Against genocidal violence, the artists from Gaza continue to pursue creative expression as a testament to their love of life. The artworks offer alternative ways of seeing, manifesting the evolving relationship between the artists’ lived realities and their creative practices over the past three years.
New Forms of Survivance, an exhibition I am co-curating with Linda Abdullah, on November 7 at Watershed Art & Ecology, Chicago, IL, USA.

Opening: Saturday, November 7 at 2 p.m., followed by a talk with both curators at 5 pm.
On view: November 7 to December 5, 2026

Synopsis of the film:

Artnaut, Ben Jackel, has a new exhibit opening this week at the Manhattan Beach Art Center. Ben has 15 sculptures in this two person show. It is a great opportunity to see so many of his works at once!

Before every trip Artnauts meet to double check work and pack for the exhibition. The Artnauts are landing today in Oaxaca and will begin hanging the show for Crossing ~ Cruzando at CASA DE LA CULTUREA OAXAQUEÑA in Oaxaca, Mexico. Exhibition runs October 22 - November 22 with the opening reception on October 22nd 4-6pm.

The Casa de la Cultura Oaxaqueña (CCO), housed in the historic former Convent of the Seven Princes (Ex Convento de los Siete Príncipes), is an important cultural institution dedicated to artistic expression, education, and community engagement. Through exhibitions, workshops, and public programming, the center fosters creative exchange across generations and disciplines. About the Exhibition — Crossings ~ Cruzando
Life is a continual passage from where we are to where we are going. Birth marks our first crossing, and each transition that follows shapes our experience of being human. Presented during Mexico's Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead), Crossings / Cruzando draws inspiration from traditions of remembrance and the symbolic return of those who have died. For the Artnauts, crossing extends beyond life and death to encompass personal, psychological, cultural, and geographical transitions. Through diverse artistic perspectives, the exhibition explores the boundaries we navigate, the connections we form, and the transformations that inform our individual and collective human experience.
