Auction Horses Rescue 501c3 non-profit horse rescue—devoted to not only saving lives, but ensuring their longterm safety.

Auction Horses Rescue is a 501c3 organization, based out of Santa Clarita, CA. Founded in January 2012, after attending the first, of what became many, Southern California auctions. Confronted with such a great number of unwanted and discarded horses, a high percentage of which were Thoroughbred ex-racehorses, we started off with the aim of identifying and reuniting these animals with those who might have once cared for them. Since then, we have built a large audience of horse lovers who watch us daily on Facebook. Through networking, donations, and the expertise of our team, we have been able to continue rescuing, rehabilitation, re-training and re-homing since our founding. Forever homes are our goal, with a small number of sanctuary horses. We have a particular focus on “problem” training horses as well as elderly horses, retired Thoroughbred broodmares in particular. These horses are in particular danger of landing in Mexico or Canada on a slaughter truck. We work with other rescue organizations when possible and have also helped a number of horses from Central and Northern California Auctions, as well as neighboring states, venturing often alone. In addition, we have been involved in consultancy to better protect the horses of our state, and beyond. Auction Horses Rescue supports the continued existence of horse auctions, as without them, a valuable tool for finding and identifying horses would be lost. Without these auctions, many of these horses would go from backyard to feed lot to Mexico-bound slaughter truck, with little hope of rescuers having the chance to intervene and deliver them to safety. Please rescue a horse *before* it enters the slaughter pipeline — only then can you save a life without funding the bad guys, and slaughter itself!

Hip 1500 - “The Last Frontier” is a 2018 Thoroughbred stallion by the great Jeranimo and out of Blood Moon Eclipse (by Informed). He is unraced. Est 16.2-3 hh. Nothing else known at this time.

“Classy Warrior” was foaled on March 21, 2014, a son of the prominent Grade 1-winning stallion Majestic Warrior and the mare Extra Classy, by Allens Prospect. He was bred in Kentucky by Rhineshire Farm LLC and purchased for $45,000 at the 2016 Barretts March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training.

Following his retirement from potential racing (he is unraced), he was brought to The Cole Ranch—a family-owned equine facility in Terra Bella, California—in 2020, to begin his stud career.

6 years later, he is at a feed lot with no history as to how he ended up there, but wherever he’s been hasn’t given him adequate care lately. He needs rescue by a stallion-experienced home.

The feed lot states he is 16.3-17 hh.

We are looking for GOOD, responsible 501c3 rescues or educated private homes to give him a safe haven once again.

LOCATION: Southern California, at a private feed lot. Specifics to be discussed with approved rescuers.

🚨 URGENT: 3 Thoroughbred Mares Dumped & Forgotten 🚨

“Magic Spot” is a 2011 bay Thoroughbred mare by Papa Clem and out of the 2003 mare “Sweet Spot (GB)”… who is also right here beside her, in urgent need of rescue.

That’s right: mother and daughter were dumped together. Their reported origin is, sadly, the most predictable of all: BG Stables.

Also dumped with them is an unknown Thoroughbred mare (a chestnut with a long, connected stripe). She is estimated to be 12–14 years old and has not yet been scanned for a microchip or had DNA sent to the Jockey Club. It’s interesting to note that Sweet Spot had three chestnut fillies between 2014 and 2017. By the time her registered 2014 filly raced, they were already microchipping racehorses in place of tattoos, could one of them be her?

All three mares are said to be very sweet, though suspected to be not much more than track broke.

“Magic Spot,” the 15-year-old daughter, was a Black Type Stakes winner at Golden Gate Fields in her 3-year-old year, earning over $180,000 in her relatively short career. She was raced hard—in her 2-year-old year, she had only three weeks between two of her races, and only a two-week break before winning the Campanile Stakes. She also raced at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Del Mar. Let this serve as a stark reminder to those who continue to claim that California Thoroughbreds never end up at feed lots or auctions.

We know Sweet Spot (GB) started her life under excellent care. She is the chestnut mare with the interrupted face marking. Sired by the 1991 British & Irish Horse of the Year, Generous (IRE), she was consigned by The National Stud at the Tattersalls sale as a yearling. She spent half her racing career running respectably in Great Britain before being imported to the US to race at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park. After that, the breeding began.
“Sweet Spot” was dumped alongside her daughter and the unidentified third mare, reportedly by BG Stables, at 23 years old…

This isn't a stretch for us to believe. We have consistently networked and rescued their horses—everything from six-month-old weanlings to mares and stallions well into their 20s, mostly from feed lots and auctions. Their recent dumps include the stallions Capital Account (rescued, thanks to the full support of his racing connections), Fighting Hussar (rescued), Legacy Account and his son (neither rescued), and the beautiful, emaciated mare Yana (rescued).

We are praying this group of mares can be saved, too.

We are looking for GOOD, responsible 501c3 rescues or educated private homes to give these girls safe haven and the lives they actually deserve.

URGENT RESCUE: 12 Mustangs—pregnant mares, young babies, and stallions 😔💔💔

6 mares—including the pictured grey who’s reportedly close to foaling.
2 babies—est. by feed lot as 1-2 months old.
4 stallions

The feed lot believes the horses are 1-5 yo.

The breakdown:
6 mares - 1 grey about to foal (the photo)
1 sorrel young mare who’s 2/3 yo and bagging up
1 sorrel mare with sorrel stud baby (maybe under 2 months)
1 grey mare and dark grey filly (also guessing under 2 months)
1 blue roan filly (guess 1y - 17 mo)
1 grey mare (prob 3 year old)

4 studs
1 grey, 1 bay, 1 sorrel with flaxen mane, 1 sorrel stud (about 5 yo or so). ‘But none of them are acting studdy at all with the mares.’

ALSO: the 2 pregnant Mustangs from a Mexican rodeo, but came from the wild in June, are still in need of rescue. (In a prior post)

LOCATION: Southern California, at a private feed lot. Specifics to be discussed with approved rescuers.

BAIL: $500, each if all 10 adults are sold together. (Babies come with their dams)
If sold separately, their individual bails are higher.

UPDATE 9/30: These horses can still be rescued, but have no options for a good rescue or private home to save them!

We have more photos and video of all 3, but especially the red kid’s horse,

We are currently no longer fundraising for them, but we do need help with donations to continue our important work. Not just with networking feed lot and auction horses, but our compassionate euthanasia fund, veterinary care fund, and support for our rehabilitating horses rescued by Auction Horses Rescue.

In the meantime we’re not giving up on getting these three ladies, and their two expectant babies, safe from harm and into a wonderful, safe rest of their life!

These two young registered Andalusians sell SEPARATELY tonight at Mike’s Auction, with their papers. Photos of the paperwork are in the comments on our Facebook post.

▪️ “OFC Trooper Hombre,” an IALHA-registered S/P stallion, turned 6 on August 11. By RS Volado, out of OFC Sofinia, by Zafiro Jim.

▪️ “OFC Yegua Bonita,” a half-Andalusian mare registered with IALHA’s affiliate registry, is 9, born in 2017. Also by RS Volado, out of the APHA mare Montanas Fancy Specs, by Montana Spook RC.

The owner says Bonita is only halter broke. Trooper might have more training.

Young Andalusians typically command higher auction prices, but we’ve seen many reappear years later, traumatized and broken, sometimes at feed lots facing slaughter. It would be wonderful to spare these two kind souls that future.

The pregnant donkeys are safe! 🩷🩷🩷

And by safe, we mean at the best possible place they could be: Oscar’s Place Adoption Center & Sanctuary!

All six expectant mothers were whisked to Oscar’s Place in an overnight haul provided by the sanctuary, allowing them to travel without enduring the sweltering daytime heat.

Now baby watch begins! We’re hoping for six healthy, happy babies—which will turn six rescued donkeys into twelve. 🩷

We cannot thank our donors and supporters enough for helping make this miracle possible.

So many donkeys and burros are not this lucky. These girls were part of a larger group that had already shipped out, leaving only the pregnant mothers behind for one last chance. Thanks to all of you, and Oscar’s Place, they received it.

If you’re interested in helping rescue donkeys in the future, especially pregnant jennies, please reach out to us. Excellent homes and reputable rescues are always needed, and references are required. 😊
