With recent media coverage and some exciting forward momentum on the push for a Jones County animal shelter, we want to take a moment to clarify something important: the shelter being advocated for isn’t a Least of These project — it’s a community project to assist Jones County.

Several of The LOT board members helped start this conversation. They did so because their work puts them face-to-face with the scale of our animal overpopulation crisis every day, and they know that solving it requires a system-wide, government-supported solution — not another nonprofit.

The proposed facility would be a public resource, operated and funded by the city and county. The LOT fully supports this effort and would welcome the chance to partner with such a facility. But the two are separate. One is a rescue organization. The other is the infrastructure our community is missing.

We will continue doing what we do best — saving lives through a foster-based model. But no single rescue can save them all. Our community needs more options to handle the volume of unwanted animals, and that’s exactly what a public facility would provide.

Want to show your support? Sign the petition at https://c.org/4P6B8yTghH to let local government know the community is behind this — and follow the Better Tomorrow Jones County Animal Project page for updates as this initiative moves forward.

(Pics are a mix of happy faces we have already placed and those needing placement. This is a tiny sampling of what animal welfare groups can do for the community. We are extremely hopeful that our state will make strides in the right direction for animals and the people that love them.)

Look. 👏 At. 👏 This. 👏 Change. 👏

A dog who was so scared and tried so hard to get away from us is now growing in soft baby fuzz, is no longer fire engine red, has bright eyes, and is getting to be a dog. A real dog. With love and care. And it’s only been a few weeks!

Celia is gentle and has a lovely personality. She’s no longer scared at all, she enjoys people and dissolves into a cuddle puddle for medicated mousse scrubs. She no longer has to try and nurse and protect babies in a body that was neglected and emaciated. She gets to be the center of attention.

We are so proud of how far she’s come, grateful to Murray and our staff for working so hard to make her comfortable, and those who support our work to give her this chance.

Puppy and kitten season is kicking our butts, but Celia is giving us a daily dose of happy to keep going.

And just wait until you see the change in her babies!! 🤩

Benny had femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery Tuesday and has been released from the hospital. Now he begins a lengthy rehabilitation and recovery process. Once Benny has healed, he will be available for adoption. He is crate trained, loves other dogs, and is good with cats. Around a year and a half old, he weighs 42 pounds and is heartworm negative.
