MEET OUR OCTOBER SPEAKER: Phil Dregger, PE, RRC, F-IIBEC

When the case involves roofing, waterproofing, or the building enclosure, Phil Dregger brings some serious experience to the conversation.

Phil is a Professional Engineer, Registered Roof Consultant, and Fellow of IIBEC who has provided consulting and expert testimony in more than 60 depositions, arbitrations, and trials.

His expertise spans roof drainage, waterproofing, California Energy Code requirements, wind and hurricane damage, condensation and moisture problems, hygrothermal analysis, and more. He is also a frequent industry lecturer and technical author and has received both the ASTM D08 William C. Cullen Award and the IIBEC/RCI Lifetime Achievement Award.

On October 21, Phil will take WESTCON members inside a fascinating subrogation case involving massive roof leaks at a five-star hotel — and a major dispute over what actually caused them.

A WESTCON Board member recently shared this article with us as a great read for our membership: “The Leak Is Not the Beginning of the Story: Why Building Envelope Lawsuits Often Start Years Earlier”

When water intrusion appears, it may feel like the beginning of a construction defect problem — but the decisions that led to it may have been made months or even years earlier.

This article from Ankura takes a look at the bigger story behind building envelope claims, including design coordination, inspections, field changes, quality control, testing, documentation, and the project decisions that can ultimately become critical in understanding causation and responsibility.

One takeaway that stood out:

The defect may be what you see. The project record often tells you how you got there.

For WESTCON members working across construction, consulting, engineering, and litigation, it’s a worthwhile read.
