A 13 October 1775 resolution of the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy with “a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible despatch, for a cruise of three months….” After the American War of Independence, the U.S. Constitution empowered the new Congress “to provide and maintain a navy.” Acting on this authority, Congress established the Department of the Navy on 30 April 1798.

John Adams, Father of the United States Navy

While John Paul Jones is widely credited as the father of the American Navy for his successful campaigns as a captain during the Revolutionary War. But much of the credit should go to John Adams, one of our Founding Fathers and 2nd President.

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress, with strong advocacy from John Adams, established the Continental Navy to protect American trade and intercept British supplies during the Revolutionary War. Adams was appointed to the Naval Committee and would become a lifelong champion of a strong U.S. Navy.

Happy Birthday to the United States Air Force!
We proudly celebrate the founding of the U.S. Air Force on September 18, 1947, when it became an independent branch of America’s Armed Forces under the National Security Act. From its early roots in the Army Air Corps to its leadership in air and space power, the Air Force has stood as a symbol of innovation, courage, and unwavering dedication to our nation.
To all Airmen—past and present—thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to defending the United States at home and around the world.
Aim High… Fly Fight Win!
