Founded in 1985, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) is an academic membership society organization and joint accredited continuing education provider whose main educational mission is to educate health care professionals in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental disorders. The organization is governed and operated by a Board of Directors, a

n Executive Committee, a Chief Executive Officer, and a variety of member committees that report to the Board of Directors. These committees provide members the opportunity to participate and contribute in a collegial environment to define and carryout the mission of the organization. AAAP provides all healthcare providers with an opportunity to work with colleagues in collaborations, learn up-close from thought leaders, and contribute their own knowledge to an ever-expanding dialogue.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rates among people with opioid use disorder (OUD) are the highest of any substance use disorder.

Among people with OUD, 1 in 3 meet criteria for a current PTSD diagnosis – the highest rate of PTSD among all substance-using populations. 41% of people with OUD have a lifetime history of PTSD.

The relationship appears to work in both directions: opioids may be used to self-medicate PTSD symptoms, and substance use increases exposure to violence and trauma, which in turn increases PTSD risk.

The Opioid Response Network (ORN) helps you help individuals with complex behavioral health needs, including OUD and co-occurring mental health disorders, all at no cost. Let us know your needs using the “Submit a Request” form at OpioidResponseNetwork.org.
