Words matter in addiction medicine.

The language we use can influence how substance use disorders are understood, how patients experience healthcare, and even how clinicians approach treatment.

The Opioid Response Network Resource Library features an Addiction Language Guide with practical recommendations for using person-centered, non-stigmatizing language when discussing substance use disorders.

For physicians and other health professionals, small changes in language can be an important part of providing respectful, evidence-informed care.
