So, Your Cat Had Kittens, and you found them GOOD homes!
Ah, the fun of kittens. Who doesn’t like kittens? And so you let your cat have a litter, just for the FUN! And you didn’t worry about finding them homes, you knew lots of people who wanted kittens.
Did you get mom fixed after that litter? Did you get all the kittens fixed before they went to new homes? Did you follow up with the people who took them to see if THEY had them fixed? Did you follow up to see if the people KEPT your kittens?
If you did not do every one of those things, YOU are not part of the solution – you are part of the problem. Statistically, that litter you helped bring into the world, just for fun, will go on to bring in more litters, and many of the offspring will be lost or abandoned, unaltered. Those kittens are a prime reason we have a free roaming cat problem – those not involved in cat rescue frequently don’t know they actually CAUSING the problem.
So, this spring and summer we have been overwhelmed with kittens, and last year’s babies are having babies, which brings us to the next point of a post about kittens – you NEVER LEAVE THE MOM! Not only do we want to avoid bottle babies – having the mom nurse them is so much healthier (and less expensive!) – but leaving mom to reproduce just continues the cycle.
Today, independent rescuers everywhere are taking care of situations caused by someone not having their cat spayed. Please – be a part of the solution; have your cat – and kittens – spayed and neutered asap! Our area boasts at least 2 clinics where feral cats can be altered free – and there are vouchers for free owned surgeries as well. Several shelters will spay your mom cat free and either take the kittens to adopt out, or alter them free for you too. Be responsible – spay/neuter today!
