Amachi Mentoring Program

Amachi Mentoring Program Amachi provides mentoring services to youth of incarcerated parents as well as other at-risk youth in the Devils Lake Region in North Dakota.

Amachi is a Nigerian Ibo word which means “Who knows but what God has brought us through this child.”

Amachi provides mentoring services to youth of incarcerated parents as well as other at-risk youth in the Devils Lake Region in North Dakota. Amachi is a partnership of a local Faith Based Coalition, RSVP+ND, and other community members. Over the past 6 years, Amachi Mentoring has provided adult

mentors to 65 youth in need of a caring adult in their life. Mentors commit to meeting weekly with their mentee for one year. Forty-three of those relationships have extended past the one year commitment, with some lasting up to 6 years. It is hard to place a value on the impact a mentor can have on a child. Encouragement, role-modeling, teaching, befriending are all roles of a mentor. Helping a child reach their potential and giving the child an opportunity to break the generational cycle are benefits of mentoring. Our Goals are to:
•Increase Self-worth
•Enhance Communication Skills
•Increase Social Interaction Skills
•Improve Grades
•Improve School Attendance
