Up next, Miss Ember!
Last September, Ember was evaluated by the Massachusetts State Police for a career change. They recognized her incredible energy and drive, and saw that she was better suited for a job in the field.
Below is an update from her handler and owner, Greg.
“My name is Sgt. Gregory Spahl, and I am a Massachusetts State Police Trooper currently assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office within the Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
In September 2025, I received Ember, who has since dedicated countless hours to training, certification, and operational readiness alongside me in the field.
After months of intensive training and real-world exposure, Ember was officially certified in March 2026 as an Ignitable Liquid Detection Canine (ILDC) through the New England State Police Administrators Conference (NESPAC) K9 Program.
Since certification, Ember has become an important asset in fire scene investigations throughout the Commonwealth. Her work assists investigators in locating potential ignitable liquid evidence that may otherwise go undetected, helping to determine fire origin and cause more efficiently and accurately.
Accelerant detection canines play a critical role in fire investigations. These highly trained dogs are capable of identifying minute traces of ignitable liquids at fire scenes, even after extensive fire damage, water application, or debris removal. Their abilities help investigators prioritize evidence collection, narrow search areas, and support criminal investigations involving suspected arson.
Ember is not only a working partner but also a member of my family. When she is not on duty, she lives with me at my residence alongside my three children and retired canine. The bond between handler and canine is built on trust, discipline, and companionship, both on and off the job.
Ember’s dedication, work ethic, and training continue to make her an invaluable partner in protecting the public and supporting fire investigations across Massachusetts.
