Here’s an update on our Gussie girl! 🐶🐾

From her veteran:

“She’s doing great and remains as active as ever. She loves swimming, hiking, retrieving, tug-of-war, and riding in the truck. If there’s a body of water nearby, she’s usually the first one in. We spend a lot of time outdoors, and she especially enjoys trips to local lakes and trails where she can explore and swim.

At home, she’s my constant companion and tends to stick close by wherever I go. Her favorite treats are cheese, peanut butter, and the occasional pup cup. She’s a happy, affectionate dog with plenty of energy and personality.

Gussie has had a tremendous positive impact on my life, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner for all of life’s adventures.”

We are so happy they found each other ❤️🐾

Veteran Pathways of New England was honored to participate in the 21st Annual Stand Down hosted by Veterans Inc. in Worcester.

This incredible event brings together service providers, employers, healthcare organizations, and community partners to connect Veterans and their families with valuable resources, support, and opportunities all in one place. The annual Stand Down serves as one of Massachusetts' premier Veteran resource events, helping Veterans access housing assistance, employment resources, healthcare services, benefits, and community support.

We are grateful for the opportunity to meet Veterans, share information about our programs, and collaborate with so many organizations committed to serving those who have served our country.

Thank you to Veterans Inc. for hosting this important event and for your continued dedication to supporting Veterans across New England.

Last Sunday, our Housing Family Support Team was at the American Legion in Rollinsford, NH, for the Su***de Prevention and Awareness fundraiser.

We were there to help raise awareness and support efforts to prevent Veteran su***de. Thanks to an incredible community turnout, the event raised more than $1,700!

Our team was on the ground to hand out:

✅ More than 30 DVNF bags
✅ Vital informational packets
✅ Safe storage tools like cable and trigger locks

Every conversation and every resource shared brings us closer to ensuring no Veteran walks alone. Thank you to everyone who showed up and supported this important cause!

Up next, Miss Ember!

Last September, Ember was evaluated by the Massachusetts State Police for a career change. They recognized her incredible energy and drive, and saw that she was better suited for a job in the field.

Below is an update from her handler and owner, Greg.

“My name is Sgt. Gregory Spahl, and I am a Massachusetts State Police Trooper currently assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office within the Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.

In September 2025, I received Ember, who has since dedicated countless hours to training, certification, and operational readiness alongside me in the field.

After months of intensive training and real-world exposure, Ember was officially certified in March 2026 as an Ignitable Liquid Detection Canine (ILDC) through the New England State Police Administrators Conference (NESPAC) K9 Program.
Since certification, Ember has become an important asset in fire scene investigations throughout the Commonwealth. Her work assists investigators in locating potential ignitable liquid evidence that may otherwise go undetected, helping to determine fire origin and cause more efficiently and accurately.

Accelerant detection canines play a critical role in fire investigations. These highly trained dogs are capable of identifying minute traces of ignitable liquids at fire scenes, even after extensive fire damage, water application, or debris removal. Their abilities help investigators prioritize evidence collection, narrow search areas, and support criminal investigations involving suspected arson.

Ember is not only a working partner but also a member of my family. When she is not on duty, she lives with me at my residence alongside my three children and retired canine. The bond between handler and canine is built on trust, discipline, and companionship, both on and off the job.

Ember’s dedication, work ethic, and training continue to make her an invaluable partner in protecting the public and supporting fire investigations across Massachusetts.

Sgt. Gregory R, Spahl

Tell Ember Congrats! 🎊🎉
