Help save a life if we can. 💜✔️

THE HEAT DID NOT LOOK LIKE A TRAP.
UNTIL THE TREE COULD NOT HOLD ME ANYMORE.

You found me on the sidewalk.

A bat.

Small body.
Folded wings.
Breathing fast against the concrete.

Maybe you thought I had fallen by accident.

Maybe you thought I was dead.
Maybe you stepped closer because I looked too tiny to be dangerous and too strange to understand.

But I had not chosen the ground.

The heat put me there.

I am a bat.

I was made for night.

For cool air.
For insects over gardens.
For silent turns above trees while the world sleeps.

By day, I hide.

Under bark.
Inside a crack.
In the narrow dark places where my body can rest until the sun leaves.

But sometimes the sun does not leave gently.

Sometimes the roost grows hotter and hotter.

The wood warms.
The air stops moving.
My little body tries to hold on.

My claws grip harder.

My wings fold tighter.

My breath gets faster.

And then the place that should have protected me becomes too hot to survive.

So I fall.

Not because I forgot how to fly.

Because heat emptied the strength from my body before night came back.

Please do not touch me with bare hands.

Do not pour water on me.
Do not throw me into the air.
Do not leave me in the sun.
Do not let children, dogs, or cats come close.

Keep everyone back.

If it is safe, place a small box or container over me.
Slide cardboard underneath.
Move the box to a quiet shaded place.

Keep me secure, dark, calm, and warm — not hot.

Then call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, bat rehabilitator, animal control, or your state wildlife agency.

And during heat waves, look down.

Near porches.
Under trees.
Beside walls.
On sidewalks where a tiny night body may have fallen before the night could save it.

Because the heat did not look like a trap.

It looked like an ordinary summer day
until the sky animal
was lying on the ground,
too tired to return to the dark. An emotional post with a dialogue box on top

You saw a spider in the bathroom and your first thought was "is that a brown recluse." It almost certainly isn't. There are three thousand spider species in North America. Exactly two are medically significant. The other 2,998 are catching the insects you don't want in the house.

The two to know: black widow — shiny black with a red hourglass, found in dark undisturbed spaces like woodpiles and sheds. Brown recluse — limited to the south-central US, violin-shaped mark, avoids contact, bites mostly when pressed against skin in stored clothing. Both are rare encounters. Fatalities are extremely rare with treatment.

🌿 The five you actually see every day are all harmless. The jumping spider watching you from the wall hunts by stalking — she can't hurt you. The wolf spider running across the floor looks terrifying and carries her babies on her back — also harmless. The cellar spider in the corner kills other spiders, including black widows. The garden orb weaver catches hundreds of insects per web per night and eats the web to rebuild it by morning.

Two out of three thousand. The spider in your bathroom is not one of them 🐾
Thank you

Twelve records. All held by animals in your yard. Most of the champions are smaller than your hand.

The garden spider strikes prey in three hundredths of a second. You can't blink that fast.

The chimney swift flies at seventy miles per hour and never lands — not on a branch, not on a wire, not on the ground. She eats, drinks, and sleeps in the air.

The spring peeper is the loudest animal per body size you'll find in any backyard. She's the size of a grape. You can hear her from half a mile.

🌿 The records that rearrange what you assumed:

The firefly converts over ninety percent of her energy into light. A household light bulb manages about ten. She's the most efficient light source on the planet, and she's blinking in your grass.

The dung beetle pulls over a thousand times her own body weight. Scaled up, that's a human dragging six full city buses.

And the box turtle in the garden has been walking the same half-acre longer than your house has been standing. She can live past a hundred.

Most of the record holders are already here. You just haven't looked down 🐾
Thank you

Most people think moths are small, brown, and forgettable. The ten species on this chart are none of those things.

The cecropia moth has a six-inch wingspan. She's the largest moth in North America — bigger than many birds. She flies at night, which is why most people go their whole lives without seeing one.

The polyphemus has eyespots the size of dimes on her hindwings. She's named after the cyclops from the Odyssey. Five inches across, and she's probably been to your porch light without you noticing.

🌿 The connections most people miss:

The sphinx moth hovering at your flowers at dusk — she's the adult form of the tomato hornworm that ate your garden. Same animal, two completely different lives.

The isabella tiger moth is the woolly bear caterpillar that crosses your sidewalk every fall. The "winter prediction" caterpillar grew up and flew to your window.

And the peppered moth — speckled black and white — changed color during the Industrial Revolution. Soot darkened the trees, and the dark moths survived. The textbook example of natural selection is sitting on your porch.

For every butterfly you see, there are roughly fourteen moths you don't 🐾
Thank you

Sometimes I think we’ve forgotten that the world isn’t ours alone. Every nest, burrow, den, and pond is someone’s home, someone’s safe place, and someone’s entire world. A little more kindness and respect for the creatures we share this earth with would make it a better place for all of us. 🤍🐦🦊🐢
