Creating a more cat-friendly veterinary experience doesnโ€™t always require a major renovation. ๐Ÿˆ

Small changes can help reduce stress from the moment a cat arrives, including separating cats and dogs when possible, minimizing noise, providing carrier covers, creating comfortable exam spaces, and giving patients time to acclimate. Training teams to recognize feline body language and adjust when a cat is opting out can make a difference, too.

Could once-daily insulin be an option for some dogs with diabetes? ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’‰

The 2026 AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs include updated recommendations for both intermediate-acting and basal insulin treatment.

A few key points:
๐Ÿ”น All diabetic dogs are insulin deficient and require exogenous insulin therapy.
๐Ÿ”น U-40 porcine insulin zinc suspension (Vetsulin) or U-100 NPH are recommended by task force members as a good first-choice option for diabetic dogs.
๐Ÿ”น Insulin degludec may also be considered a first-choice option.
๐Ÿ”น Basal insulins, including insulin degludec and glargine U-300, have a long duration of action that may permit once-daily administration.
๐Ÿ”น Basal insulins do not have to be timed with feeding and may be helpful for patients with inconsistent or unpredictable appetites.
๐Ÿ”น Because either every-12-hour or every-24-hour administration may be needed, the task force recommends CGM when starting a basal insulin to help determine dose and administration frequency.

Toxicology is full of familiar risks, but the details can change everything.

At AAHA Con 2026, Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, shared some of the most common myths veterinary teams encounter in tox cases, from rodenticide color-coding and lily exposure to hidden xylitol sources, NSAIDs, chocolate, and grape toxicity.

The scale only tells part of the story.

Body condition score and muscle condition score assess different things, and they should be evaluated separately. A patient can be overweight and still have muscle loss, which is why relying on weight alone can miss important changes in body composition.

During Pet Obesity Awareness Month, itโ€™s a good reminder to look beyond the number on the scale. Nutritional screening, including body weight, BCS, and MCS, should be part of routine assessment for every pet, every visit.

Diabetes management is not one-size-fits-all across species.

For appropriately selected, newly diagnosed cats, SGLT2 inhibitors may be preferred as first-line therapy. Diabetic dogs, on the other hand, require insulin from the day of diagnosis. Remission, monitoring, and follow-up also look very different between feline and canine patients.

Swipe through for a quick look at some of the biggest differences, then read more from Renee Rucinsky, DVM, DABVP (Feline), co-chair of the 2026 AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines task force.

What does it mean to build a care plan around both the patient and the family?

Family-centered veterinary care recognizes that medical needs are only part of the picture. Cost, access, communication, family circumstances, and available community resources can all affect what care is possible.

That can mean offering multiple treatment paths when appropriate, talking openly about financial considerations, and working with clients to find a plan they can realistically carry forward.

The AAHA Community Care Guidelines offer a framework for delivering medically sound care while reducing barriers and helping keep pets with the families who love them.
