Queer Asterisk Q***r Asterisk is a nonprofit providing q***r & trans counseling, community programs and education. Nervous? Our therapists are q***r and trans too!

Q***r Asterisk provides therapeutic services for the LGBTQPIA community or those who identify as le***an, gay, bisexual, transexual/transgender, q***r/questioning, pansexual/pangender, intersex, asexual/agender, and allies. Q***r Asterisk is for all of us who identify outside of the heteronormative bubble! Our therapists utilize somatic and dance/movement therapy, wilderness and canine/equine therapy, and motivational interviewing in their work with children, adolescents, adults, and couples/families of all configurations. Our aim is to support the growth and healing of everyone involved including community members such as employers and teachers.

✨EXPANDING OUR REACH ✨ As Q***r Asterisk grew, so did our team, our community, and our vision for what was possible.

We started gathering for staff retreats, taking time to connect, reflect, and shape our shared purpose. Our community events continued to bring people together, creating space for conversation, connection, and exploration of q***r identity.

We were also expanding access to care. Alongside our Boulder and Denver locations, we opened offices in Fort Collins and Longmont, bringing q***r and trans-affirming mental health services to more communities across the Front Range.

These were years of growth, experimentation, and figuring things out together. We were becoming an organization, while holding onto the grassroots spirit that brought us together in the first place.

✨ THE NEXT CHAPTER ✨

A year or two in, Q***r Asterisk was beginning to grow.

More counselors, clients, and conversations. More people finding us — and finding each other.

What started as a small experiment in creating affirming mental health care was becoming something real: a community, a practice, and a place where q***r and trans people didn’t have to explain who they were before the work could begin.

We were learning as we went. Building programs, deepening relationships, showing up in the community. Asking what q***r-centered mental health care could look like if we built it from our own values, experiences, and imagination.

We didn’t know yet what Q***r Asterisk would become.

We just knew there was a need — and that people kept showing up. 💜

Ten years later, that little community has grown beyond anything we could have imagined.

✨ WHERE IT BEGAN ✨

A basement studio at Broadway & Pearl in Boulder. A few dedicated counselors, each supporting a few clients. Tea brewing in the corner. People sitting together on the floor, talking about what q***rness meant to us.

These were the earliest days of Q***r Asterisk.

It was grassroots, creative, and intimate. We gathered for Q***r Conversation, came into our identities together, and imagined what it could mean to build mental health care by and for q***r and trans people.

We were also gathering in a charged and painful political moment — in the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting, amid a growing gender revolution and a deep need for spaces where q***r people could find one another.

Before there were hundreds of clients, dozens of therapists, or ten years of history, there were a handful of us in a basement — sharing snacks, asking big questions, and building community.

This is where Q***r Asterisk began. 💜

10 years later, we’re still asking the questions, still gathering, still becoming.

Meet our Engender visionary performance artist! When ShawnT is out of the seat as a somatic art therapist at Q***r Asterisk, they are a multi-disciplinary artist (BA Studio Art, MFA Dance), facilitator/choreographer of movement, and often found on rollerblades or a trail around Boulder, CO. Her creative practices are often at the intersection of integrative q***ring, social-environmental justice, and contemplative imagination as world making.

Meet our emcee ✨King Lexie (she/her) is a London-based interdisciplinary performing artist, professional somatic coach and facilitator working across site-specific performance, sound and movement. In creative and therapeutic spaces alike, she delights in the places where risk meets safety. King is currently devising new choreographic and filmic work around listening and dreaming in the UK and Greece, applying her own methodology, The Creative (H)erotic, alongside Eugene Gendlin’s Thinking at the Edge.
