The Square on 21st

The Square on 21st A vibrant pop-up park space in Denver’s Ballpark District where residents and visitors of all ages can relax, eat, drink, and play!

Denver's Ballpark District does not have city parks or public spaces. In the summer of 2017, the City of Denver, Ballpark Collective, and many partners tested the idea of closing a city block on 21st Street and converting it to an urban park, with a long-term plan of upgrading 21st, Wynkoop St, and eventually an entire trail around downtown. This page is managed by friends and neighbors who would

like to see great public spaces come to the area. The Square on 21st is a pop-up park and festival space in Denver's Ballpark District on 21st Street between Market and Lawrence Streets. When activated, it provides a gathering place for an area that doesn’t currently have public spaces. Those who live, work, and visit here have an opportunity to enjoy amenities that they usually have to leave the area to access. The space increases street-level activity and encourages area residents, commuters and visitors to consider Denver’s urban spaces in new ways. Ballpark Collective, the registered neighborhood organization (RNO) for the area, programmed 15+ events in the pop-up park from June 15 to August 15, 2017 including dueling pianos, DJs, salsa dancing, and the introduction of their Silent Disco Street Parties. These activations earned numerous community engagement awards. They continue to program events and festivals to support and shape the long-term vision for permanently transforming the blocks. The installation urges visitors to consider new and creative uses for publicly-owned streets and sidewalks. It is the result of a series of city plans, including the 21st and Wynkoop Urban Design plan (2016), as well as The Outdoor Downtown, a plan for downtown’s parks and open spaces. Our Story

Denver's Ballpark District does not have city parks or public spaces. This summer, the City of Denver tested the idea of closing one or more city blocks on 21st Street and converting them to urban parks, with a bigger plan of upgrading 21st, Wynkoop St, and eventually an entire loop around downtown. This page is managed by the Ballpark Collective who would like to see some great public spaces come to the neighborhood. The Square on 21st is a pop-up park in Denver's Ballpark District on 21st Street between Larimer and Lawrence Streets. Open from June 15 to August 15, 2017, it provided a temporary gathering place for a neighborhood that doesn’t currently have open or public spaces. Those who live and work here had an opportunity to enjoy amenities they usually have to leave the neighborhood to access. The space increased street-level activity and encouraged area residents, commuters and visitors alike to consider Denver’s urban spaces in new ways. The installation urged visitors to consider new and creative uses for publicly-owned streets and sidewalks. The Square on 21st project won community engagement awards due in part to the series of 15 events that the Ballpark Collective programmed on the block including singers, DJs, Lucha Libre-style wrestling, movies nights, dueling pianos, salsa lessons, and the popular Silent Disco Street Parties. Ballpark Collective is planning a series of weekend closures and possibly a longer summer closure to continue to program, test, raise money, and build support for the project.
