Anchor Center for Blind Children teaches visually impaired infants, young children and their families, providing hope and a nurturing environment where children reach their highest potential. Anchor Center is the only privately funded organization in Colorado (and one of a handful nationwide) that provides early intervention/developmental education services to very young children with visual impairment. With an operating budget over $2 million, we rely heavily on individual donations to ensure our programs continue to meet the needs of Colorado’s children with vision loss.

All of us at Anchor Center were so excited to see Erik Weihenmayer, Anchor Center for Blind Children’s 2026 Sunset in the City keynote speaker, featured on 9NEWS (KUSA) yesterday talking about his incredible new children’s book, Touching Everest!

Erik’s story is extraordinary: he became the first blind person to summit Mount Everest and has spent his life showing the world that there are truly No Barriers to what’s possible.

Now, Touching Everest is helping children who are blind and visually impaired experience his Everest adventure through tactile illustrations and Braille—bringing the story to life through touch.

And we can’t wait to bring Erik’s inspiring message to Sunset in the City on October 24! His journey, his passion for accessibility and his belief in possibility make him the perfect person to help us celebrate the incredible children and families of Anchor.

🎥 Watch the news feature below!

Then, join us at Sunset in the City on Saturday, October 24th at 5:30pm for an unforgettable evening with Erik and the Anchor community. Visit anchorcenter.org/sunset26tickets to purchase tickets.

TREMENDOUS TUESDAYS: MEET INDIGO

"Indigo has blossomed in so many wonderful ways during her time at Anchor, and we couldn't be more proud to be a part of the Anchor community!

She has grown from a timid explorer of the Motor Room into a bold and enthusiastic participant, charging in each week with excitement, jumping into the ball pit, and riding every car with exuberance.

Her adventurous spirit has even extended to Kitchen Time, where she has discovered new foods that she likes including pickles, seaweed, and oranges!

Beyond her physical and culinary adventures, what truly warms our hearts is the kind and caring person she is becoming through being part of the Anchor community. Indigo shows genuine compassion for her friends when they're having a hard time, and naturally steps into a leadership role when she's able to help guide her peers.

Whether she's leading the way in the Motor Room or soaking in the magic of the light room, especially the Spinning Wand, and all that glitters and moves, changing shapes as it glows, Indigo brings joy, courage, and heart to everything she does.

We are so grateful for the Anchor community and the incredible role it and all the teachers have played in her growth!" - Indigo's parents, Frankki and Doug

🏅 What a great day at Anchor! 🏅

Our first Community Day of the year was a Sports Day, and it was full of opportunities to move, explore, connect and play! 💙

We were thrilled to welcome guests from Special Olympics Colorado Young Athletes and the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes - USABA , including Christian King, a member of the U.S. Paralympics Men’s Goalball Team.

Our children and families had the chance to explore adaptive sports, get hands-on with equipment, try new activities and learn from athletes who are showing that sports are for everyone! ⚽🏐🥅

Sports offer so much more than physical activity. For children with visual impairments, participating in sports can help build orientation and mobility skills, confidence, communication and social skills, while creating meaningful opportunities to work together, follow directions, navigate space and experience what it means to be part of a team. 🤝

With 22 families joining us, it was an incredible morning of connection, inclusion and fun!

A huge thank-you to our community partners and athletes for spending the morning with us and helping our children ! 🧡

We’re beyond excited to announce Erik Weihenmayer as the keynote speaker for our 2026 Sunset in the City Gala!

There’s something special about the first week of school, the excitement of familiar faces, the courage it takes to try something new, and the joy of discovering just how much is possible.

For our children, a new school year is more than a fresh start. It’s a chance to explore, grow in confidence, build connections, and discover the world in their own unique way.

We’re honored to walk alongside our children and families through each step of that journey. Here’s to a year filled with learning, laughter, growth, and countless moments worth celebrating.

Welcome back, Anchor families. We’re so glad you’re here.

Today, we remember and honor Dolly Parton and the incredible legacy she leaves through her love of children, books, and the power of imagination.

Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and its Braille Tales collaboration with the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), the joy of receiving a free book has been made accessible to children who are blind or low vision.

This partnership holds a very special place in the heart of Anchor Center for Blind Children. We have been fortunate to help register hundreds of our families for this wonderful program over the years, giving young children the opportunity to experience the excitement of receiving a book of their very own while building early literacy skills and discovering the joy of reading.

Braille Tales is available to eligible children who are blind or low vision, or who have a parent who is blind or low vision. Children must be age 5 or under, and families must reside in the United States or its outlying areas. Once enrolled, children receive a free book every other month until they reach their 6th birthday.

When Imagination Library began its partnership with APH, Dolly shared words that beautifully capture the heart of this program:

“I am so excited that we can now bring the same joy to kids who may have some trouble seeing but have no trouble in believing that all of their dreams can come true.”

At Anchor Center, we have seen that joy firsthand. A book can open a door to imagination, connection, literacy, and possibility. For children who are blind or low vision, having access to books in accessible formats can help make that door even wider.

Thank you, Dolly, for believing in the magic of books and for making sure that children of all abilities have the opportunity to dream, imagine, and believe in what is possible.

With gratitude,
Anchor Center for Blind Children

Thank you, Denver Central Park Living, for featuring Anchor Center for Blind Children in your September 2026 issue! 💙

“For more than 20 years, Anchor Center for Blind Children has been transforming lives right here in Central Park. Families walk through its doors during some of the most uncertain moments of their lives, often after learning that their infant or young child is blind or visually impaired. What they find is far more than specialized services. They discover a community that believes every child can learn, grow, and thrive.”

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share Anchor Center’s mission and the incredible impact our children, families, and community experience every day.
