Enhancements, education, youth employment, and events along the South Platte River

The Greenway Foundation engages with the Denver community through a range of programs:

-School-Based Excursions

-Youth Internships and Employment: The Greenway River Rangers is a youth development program that introduces high school students to careers in environmental education, natural resources and related fields. During the school year, TGF offers environmental education internships at select schools in Denver where students gain hands on teaching experience, training in education theory and exposure to environmental issues that are local and relevant. During the summer, TGF hires eight to ten youth who become educators at SPREE’s Adventures Outside Summer Camp, complete service learning projects, and develop strong leadership skills. The Greenway River Ranger program aims to provide Denver youth with the knowledge, skills and motivation to become the environmental leaders of tomorrow.

-Summer and Holiday Camps: SPREE offers unique day camps along the river in the Summer and throughout the school year. Kids connect with nature by playing and learning along the South Platte River. Check us out at www.spreeweb.org/summercamp

This year's Gala on the Bridge was one for the books! This special night included special guests, our first ever paddle raise, incredible food, and amazing music. Thank you to all of our sponsors, especially our title sponsor PCL Construction and presenting sponsors Revesco Properties and Griffis Residential. To everyone that joined us, thank you for your support. Gala on the Bridge is The Greenway Foundation's largest fundraising event of the year and we couldn't do it without you. By working together we can have a river that is cleaner, safer, and more accessible for all. Because a healthy river means a healthy Denver!

The Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education hosted an incredible conference and our team had a blast gaining new tools to continue supporting our students' learning. Our very own education director, Bekky Harkins, inspired environmental educators who are new to the field during her insightful presentation and panel. Huge thanks to our friends at Xcel Energy and the Xcel Energy Foundation for their incredible support of our youth education programs.

Through their grant funding, Xcel Energy is helping us bring thousands of local students outdoors to connect with the South Platte River. Their support directly fuels our hands-on SPREE field trips, powers our River Ranger internship and employment programs, and inspires high school students in our Greenway Leadership Corps to explore environmental careers and give back to their communities.

When organizations invest in local youth and outdoor learning, they help build a stronger, healthier, and more connected Denver for everyone. We are so grateful for Xcel Energy's partnership in empowering our city's next generation of river stewards!

Happy Hour with a Purpose!
Join us next Wednesday, October 7th, for our Young Professionals Happy Hour Clean-Up at Confluence Park! Spend an hour giving back to our community and afterward, we’ll head over to Denver B**r Co. to unwind over pizza, local brews, and trivia. Plus, your first pint at DBC is on the house!

🧹 5:30-6:30 PM: Trash Pick-Up & Park Improvement
🍕 6:30-7:30 PM: Pizza, Drinks & Socializing @ Denver B**r Co

We'll provide trash grabbers, gloves, and hand sanitizer. Just bring:
💧 A full water bottle
👟 Closed-toed shoes
☀️ Weather-appropriate clothing
🧤 Work gloves if you have them (extras will be available to borrow)

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us last weekend for Pacifico Preserves Fall South Platte Stewardship Day! It was such a beautiful day at Globville Landing Park, and with everyone's incredible effort, we collected 1,180 gallons (787.25 lbs) of trash and invasive plants. We know the South Platte River appreciates you for taking some time out of your day to show nature some love.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for Family Stewardship Day! It was such a beautiful day at Grant Frontier Park, and with everyone's incredible effort we collected nearly 80 gallons of trash in just one short hour. You don't necessarily need a lab to test the South Platte River- you can just flip over a rock! The insects living on the riverbed (macroinvertebrates) act as living health reports for our water. Chemical tests capture single moments, while these organisms show us the river's long-term health. Finding sensitive species under the stones means our water is thriving!

A healthy city depends on a healthy river.

This Saturday, September 26, we're bringing the community together for our annual Pacifico Preserves Fall South Platte Stewardship Day at Globeville Landing Park.

Hands-on community stewardship efforts like this are essential for protecting local wildlife habitats, preserving trail infrastructure, and preventing pollution from flowing down the South Platte watershed.

Big news! Every year, The Greenway Foundation awards the Joe Shoemaker Memorial Scholarship to help our River Rangers pursue their college dreams. We are so proud to announce our 2026 scholarship winners: Ami and Jonathan! Both Ami and Jonathan have shown incredible dedication as environmental educators over the past year, inspiring younger campers and growing into true leaders along the river.
Ami has been with TGF for two years, working toward her Environmental Educator Certification through CAEE. She’s headed to DU this fall! Jonathan joined us this year, poured his heart into his work, and is currently earning his Apprentice Environmental Education Certificate. He will be attending Colorado College this fall!

Seeing their growth has been extraordinary, and we can’t wait to see all the big things ahead for them. Please join us in celebrating Ami and Jonathan!
