Meet our new Victim Advocate Intern, Sara! ✨

Sara is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work degree with a concentration in clinical trauma-informed practice. She is passionate about addressing the intersection of disability, violence, and trauma through advocacy and survivor-centered support.

As someone who has experienced interpersonal violence and lives with a physical disability, she understands the importance of creating spaces where all people feel seen, valued, and supported. During their time at The Initiative, they hope to be a safe and trusted resource for survivors while gaining the knowledge and experience needed to continue advocating for disability-inclusive services and systems in their future career.

We’re excited to have Sara on our team! 💜

For Mental Health Awareness Month, our team stepped away from our screens and into a pottery class together. Creative, hands-on activities like pottery can act as a somatic practice, helping us reconnect with our bodies, regulate stress, and be present in the moment. As a fully remote team, making space for connection and community care is an important part of how we support one another. 💜

National Mobility Awareness Month reminds us that accessibility is not optional.

In 1985, disability activists Sharon Hickman and Laura Hershey founded what is now The Initiative after seeing disabled survivors turned away from the support they needed because services were not accessible. More than 30 years later, we continue their legacy by advocating for survivor-centered, accessible services for people with disabilities across Colorado.

Accessibility is safety. Accessibility is advocacy. Accessibility is justice. 💜

Trauma-informed care is more than a buzzword. It is a commitment to supporting survivors in ways that prioritize safety, autonomy, and dignity.

At the Initiative, we believe survivors deserve support that feels safe, accessible, and empowering. 💜

Today is MMIW Awareness Day.
Native American women face a crisis of violence, murder is the third leading cause of death for Native women, and those living on reservations experience murder rates ten times higher than the national average.

The Initiative stand in solidarity with Native communities and honor the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women. Their stories matter. Their lives matter. ❤️

Here’s how you can take action:
🔴 Follow Native-led social media accounts
🔴 Stay informed about MMIW in your area
🔴 Join marches, rallies, or local events
🔴 Donate to organizations supporting impacted communities
🔴 Write to your local officials and demand justice

Let’s raise our voices and demand change.

Two of our staff members recently attended a DVP training, and these were some of their key takeaways.

When we slow down and truly listen, we help create safer spaces for people to share their stories, even the ones they may not yet have words for. The way we respond matters. Offering validation, care, and encouragement can make a meaningful difference in someone’s healing journey.

This work starts with how we show up for one another. 💜

Denim Day began in protest of a 1998 court ruling that blamed a survivor’s jeans rather than holding a perpetrator accountable.

We wear denim to stand against victim-blaming and to stand with survivors—today and every day.
We believe you. It was not your fault. 💙

The people behind this work 💜

We’re so grateful to have had our Western Slope advocate join us in the office for the day, making it possible to finally capture an updated team photo together.

Behind every email, call, and moment of support is a team that shows up with compassion, dedication, and care. This work is deeply human, and we’re honored to stand alongside survivors every step of the way.
